After watching many players perform during the high school season, you get a sense of who’s ready to emerge. In this article, we take a look at some players who were poised for breakout grassroots seasons.
Desmond Green Desmond Green 6'9" | C Silverado | 2021 State NV 6’9 C Silverado (#72PHN 2021) – Take one look at Green and you’ll instantly know why I was looking forward to watching him. A physical specimen, Green is one of those players that can get you, 5 boards, a game by accident. What I was looking for from him this Spring was one of those aha games. He had stretches for Silverado where he was dominant, IMO it was only a matter of time before he showed off his shot-blocking and finishing ability in a big setting during the Summer.
Christopher Nwuli 6’3 SG LV Panthers 2025 – Nothing better than being on the front end of a trend, and in about a year everyone is going to know of Nwuli. For me it’s very simple, I wanted to see how many times he was the clear cut best player on the floor. Nwuli is uber skilled and has the ability to be a spectacular playmaking wing. Similar to a 7th-grade version of Jaden Hardy Jaden Hardy 6'4" | CG Coronado | 2021 State #4 Nation NV where all of his skills are simply better then players his age.
Jevon Yapi 5’5 PG All Vegas 2025 – Yapi fits perfectly on this stage. He has a playground handle and just the right amount of flash to excite a crowd. He’s a willing defender and has a high bball IQ. For players like this, the question always is if they don’t grow much more, can they play a pure 1 at a high level consistently? I was interested in watching that from Yapi this Spring.
Ephram Ezidiegwu 6’5 C Bonanza 2023 – I walked into a Bonanza freshmen game and saw a senior player. Ezidiegu is extremely raw, however, it’s impossible not to notice him. Good fluid athlete that has good lift off the ground. Development, development, development was what I was looking for with him. Has he developed a post-game, or the ability to step outside? Both questions that I wanted answered this Spring.
Jaylen Berry Jaylen Berry 6'2" | PG Basic | 2021 State NV 6’2 PG Basic 2021 (#19PHN 2021) (featured image) – Berry just kept getting better and better as the season went on. He has the length and skill set to be a terrific combo guard. Basic plays a high tempo style during the high school season, so he fits right in on the grassroots scene. Berry didn’t play last spring so I have been anxiously anticipating watching him against national competition.
