Whether leading their teams to Sectional championships, putting up show-stopping performances in front of college coaches or just scoring at a record rate, these players were unstoppable last week. Now, let’s take a look at the top players from 3A Sectionals.
Lane Sparks Lane Sparks 6'2" | PG Greensburg | 2021 State IN is not a well-known player across the state of Indiana, but he definitely showed that he should be. Sparks and Greensburg played two games to win the Sectional with wins over Connersville and South Dearborn. Sparks scored 28 in the first game and 29 in the finals. Also, in their win over Connersville, he pulled down 10 rebounds for just his fourth double-double of the year. Sparks has been unreal with him scoring at least 20 in 12 of their last 13 games. He is going to need to continue to score at a high-level this upcoming weekend in Regional.
Simon Scherry Simon Scherry 6'2" | PG Heritage Hills | 2020 State IN is the all-time leader in assists at Heritage Hills, and he put his passing skills on display in the Sectional tournament. Heritage Hills won two games over Evansville Bosse and Evansville Memorial to win the Sectional, and Scherry lit it up with 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists per game. Scherry’s best game came in the Sectional championship with a 23 point, 11 rebound, double-double. Scherry has been playing at a high level as of late, and he is going to be the difference-maker for Heritage Hills this weekend in the Regional tournament.
Jerry Bracey – Mishawaka Marian – 2020
Bracey was on fire in the Sectional tournament, averaging 20 per game en route to Marian’s championship. Bracey’s best game was in the semifinals. Marian defeated South Bend St. Joseph 68-66 in overtime thanks to 27 points from Bracey. Overall, he averaged 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists in their three victories. Bracey will be a key factor for Mishawaka Marian in the Regional tournament as they look to make a run to the state finals.
Trey Kaufman Trey Kaufman 6'8" | PF Silver Creek | 2021 State #39 Nation IN – Silver Creek – 2021
Kaufman is one of the top big men in the state right now, and he put on a show in the Sectional tournament for Silver Creek. Silver Creek went 3-0 in the Sectional tournament, and Kaufman averaged 21 points and 12 rebounds per game. Kaufman put up his 13th, 14th, and 15th double-doubles of the season, and he is going to be crucial for Silver Creek in the Regional tournament. #1 Silver Creek takes on #3 Heritage Hills in the first Regional game in a rematch from earlier this season. In that game, Kaufman dominated with 32 points and 13 rebounds. That will no doubt be a must-watch game this weekend.
Grant Niehaus – Washington – 2020
Niehaus was the unsung hero in the 3A Sectionals this past week as he exploded for 81 points in Washington’s three victories. He averaged 27 points per game. He started off the week with 26 in Washington’s overtime win over Vincennes Lincoln. Then, in the semifinals, he had 23 in the blowout victory over Pike Central. Finally, in the highly-anticipated Sectional finals game against Sullivan, Niehaus was unstoppable with 32 points. If Niehaus can continue to score at this rate, Washington is going to have a chance on their home floor to pull some upsets in Regional.
