A lot of second round games were played on Wednesday and a lot of big time players showed up and showed out for their team. Here are some of the top playoff performances from Wednesday night.
Katrell Wallace 6’1 G Las Vegas 2021( #23 PHN 2021)- Wallace has been a breakout player all year for the Wildcats. The junior guard has been a solid two-way player all season. He’s been consistent and the terrific regular season culminated into a fantastic post season performance. Wallace led the team in scoring with 25 points and was a huge factor in his teams big playoff win over Centennial. It was an ultimate team win for the Wildcats. Fernando Carmona Jr and Tavi Jackson also had great performances as well to lead their team in a hard fought yet dominating victory. To go back to Wallace for a second his stock continues to rise because of his increased IQ and his ability to show up in big moments.
Martel Williams 6″2 G Silverado 2020 (#8 PHN 2020)- Martel Williams maybe the most well rounded scorer in his class. He was a first-team All-Southwest League selection a season ago. The senior averaged 22.3 points and 9.1 rebounds. He is built like a house of bricks and can have his way with any guard in the state. On Wednesday’s playoff game against Green Valley he added to that legacy with a strong 24 point game. Williams made Green Valley guard him close and when they did he was able to get to the free throw line at will converting 10/10 free throws. Williams continues to show how dynamic he is as a player. My grandfather use to say there is more than one way to skin a cat and there is more than one way for Martel Williams to get buckets.
Jaylen Berry 6’2 G Basic 2021 (#19 PHN 2021)– Berry added on to the legacy of a great junior year by leading his team to a strong win vs an overwhelming favorite Desert Oasis. Berry was battling leg cramps all night. Berry turned in a gutty playoff performance.Berry finished with 13 tough points 7 rebounds and 3 steals. His impact was felt on the defensive end as he was asked to defend Dominque Ford. Berry harassed on defense, deflected passes and got steals. The junior has seen his stock rise all year and after yesterday it is easy to understand why.
Amari James 6’3 G Spring Valley 2020 (#21 PHN 2020)- First and foremost congratulations to James as he recently announced he will be staying home and playing his collegiate ball at CSN. This has been a great year for Spring Valley they have accomplished a lot of monumental things. Last night they won their first ever home playoff game and the senior guard was a huge reason for that. James is a strong physical combo guard. He shoots it well and gets to the bucket with ease. Wednesday he showed off those skills leading his team with 25 points and knocking down five three-pointers against Sierra Vista. It was a game to remember for this senior.
Nickolas Attanasio 6″4 SG 2020 (#54 PHN 2020)- I wrote the other day come playoff time you want a guy on your team that is a certified marksman. The senior proved that theory to be right in a solid win vs Rancho. Attanasio did what he has done all season and that is lead the team in scoring. He had 24 on the night and Attanasio hit 5 three pointers and also played strong defense. Whenever the team needs a big shot the lefty seems like he always delivers.
Justus Harvey 5’7 G 2020 Democracy Prep (Not Ranked)- Harvey reminds me a lot of Isiah Thomas he isn’t the tallest ball player in the world but his heart and sure will allows him to do whatever he wants on the court. He led a shorthanded lineup to a great win over Del Sol. Harvey led the team in scoring with 25 points and he was a little pinball in and out the lane. Harvey has had a great overall year averaging 17 points per game. He maybe one of the more underrated scorers in all the state and he gave Del Sol fits in the playoffs. If you walk off he bus and he looks short don’t let his height fool you the kid is a dog!
