This is a top heavy tournament with some upset minded squads near the bottom. All teams have their stars but it will come down to who can get the best efforts from their entire team. Here are the main x-factors to keep an eye on during the tournament.
Denver Anglin (2022) | Gill St. Bernard’s
Gill St. Bernard’s is a very well-rounded team. Princeton commit Zach Martini dominates the inside along with freshman sensaton Mackenzie Mgbako. On the outside, Anglin leads the way. He is a sophomore who can score from anywhere on the floor. Anglin is averaging 13 points per game this season and has knocked down 43 three’s. Teams are going to game plan to stop the inside presence of Gill St. Bernard’s. This means that guards like Anglin will have to show up if they want to win a title.
Noah Harris (2021) | Rutgers Prep
Rutgers Prep is 22-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to national powerhouse Huntington Prep (WV). They began the season 20-0 behind the No. 2 player in the Class of 2021 Trey Patterson. Another strong junior on the team is Harris. He is second on the team in scoring averaging 17.1 points per game this season. Harris also leads the team with 7.6 assists per contest. He is an elite shooter from the outside. Harris has hit 81 three’s this season which is among the top in the conference. Harris is a player who can win a game on his own if he gets hot from deep.
Chad Martini (2021) | Watchung Hills
Brother of Zach Martini from Gil St. Bernard’s, Chad features a very similar skillset. He is averaging 12.1 points and 11.6 rebounds per game as a junior. The 6’6 forward is a player who has a soft touch around the rim. He does not step out and shoot it often but it is not necessary when he can dominate in the post like he does. Martini will look to lead Watchung Hills along with Michael Bressler, who is the team’s leading scorer.
Jordan Myers (2020) | Immaculata
Jaden Honis has dominated in every game he has played this season with 21.1 points per game. Myers has been his second in command. Myers is averaging a double-double with 16.3 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. He has notched 18 double-doubles this season. At 6’3, Myers is smaller than the typical dominant rebounder but he has the athleticism and instinct to get to the perfect spot when the ball is in the air.
Ethan Hilliman (2020) | Somerville
Somerville enters the tournament as the No. 5 seed with a record of 20-4. Hilliman has been their leading scorer all season with 18.3 points per game. He has hit just four shots from beyond the arc this season. Hilliman uses hit 6’4 frame to drive to the basket and draw contact. He has hit 93 free throws this season which is among the top in Somerset County. Hilliman will have to continue his dominance on the offensive end if Somerville wants to make a run.
Quadir Harrell (2022) | Bound Brook
Bound Brook has the tough task of handling Gill St. Bernard’s in round one. This is difficult because of their prowess inside. Harrell will have to break down the defense and score in anyway he can. Harrell has hit 52 three’s and 87 free throws throughout his sophomore season. He has been Bound Brook’s No. 1 option since the beginning of the season.
