Christian Decker, senior, Waverly:
Waverly took its lumps in the Lyon County League, finishing 3-4 and 8-12 overall. But the Bulldogs got by Marais ds Cygnes Valley Monday night. The usually well-balanced Bulldogs were led in scoring by Christian Decker, who finished with 17. Waverly has its hands full Thursday when it takes on Madison, the third ranked team in 1A.
Gavin Cornelius, junior, Frankfort:
Frankfort easily handled Wakefield 42-21 Monday night. Cornelius matched his season average with 12 points. Frankfort, which finished the regular season 15-6, 9-3 in the Twin Valley League, will face BV-Randolph Thursday.
Kamble Haverkamp, senior, Raef Osterhaus, sophomore, Centralia:
The Panthers blew out Onaga 85-23. Centralia improved to just 12-9, but their 10-3 record in the Twin Valley League shows they should be a tough out in the 1A playoffs.
The balanced scoring effort was led by Haverkamp’s 14 points. Osterhaus stepped out of the shadows of some of his higher-scoring teammates to tally 13. The Panthers play Thursday against Burlingame.
There will be several of the area’s leading players to watch in the second round action on Thursday:
Drew Stutesman, sophomore, and Chase Harrison, junior, Madison:
The third-rated team is led Stutesman, who is averaging 14 points a game. The 18-2 Bulldogs will face Waverly Thursday.
Devan McEwen, junior, Lebo:
Lebo, 16-2, ranked #5 in 1A, has high-scoring junior McEwan to lead the way. The 6-foot-2 junior is averaging nearly 20 points a game. Lebo will face Olpe, which blew the doors off Hartford 70-15 in the opening round.
Avery Gatzemeyer, sophomore, and Tyler Lockhart, senior, Valley Falls:
The first seed at the Valley Falls regional is 14-5. They are led by Gatzemeyer, a 6-foot-1 sophomore who averages about 15 points a game. Valley Falls will take on the winner of Wetmore and Troy.
