Spencer Goetz of Chaska (6’3 F, 2021). Spencer went up against a couple similar sized senior athletes from STMA at forward and he had one of his better games of the season. Goetz has a good strong base and he couples that with knowing how to work to space with a quick cut or a strong one-dribble game. Good jumper from mid-range and a couple strong finishes at the rim through traffic for his 15 points on 7 of 10 shooting. Four assists too playing his part in the awesome Chaska ball movement.
PJ Hayes of Waconia (6’6 Wing 2020). Because I was at the other gym getting my first look at STMA this year I missed the Waconia win over St. Louis Park but I was privy to some of the game highlights. Hayes led the Cats with 27 points in the six point victory continuing to stretch defenses past their max with his shooting touch (it hits teams at the arc, off the dribble, moving off the screen, from mid-range, wherever). Hayes is now two points away from being the all time leading scorer in Waconia history (Shelby Moats is the leader right now but that will change when the Cats face rival Orono on Friday).
Zach Lea of Chaska (6’4, Guard, 2020). Saturday night was another example of how I just don’t know that you can put a position on Zach Lea. He’s like a D2 signed version of Tyler Wahl. His ability to pass the ball is astonishing and then he runs back down the floor and defends a top option for the other team. Knocked out four threes vs STMA scoring 19 points (7 of 10 shooting) plus dished out six assists with four boards.
Calvin Sisk of Rockford (7’0, Center, 2020). The 7-footer is headed to Minot State and I think if he keeps putting in work and the coaching staff at Minot State is committed to using a player his size (I think they will be) then they could have a steal. Why? Because first off Sisk is a true seven footer that sprints the floor. It seems like a small thing but seven footers that hustle their body from one hoop to the hoop are rare. Calvin does it. And his length is nearly impossible to shoot over which is why Holy Family rarely even took a shot in the paint. Sisk had 18 points, 11 rebounds, and I saw three blocks in my partial time there and I am sure there were more. The guy was hunting blocks and dunks and when size does that everybody in his team wins.
Lovell Williams of Maple Grove (6’2 CG 2020). I’ve been a Lovell Williams appreciater in the past, today I would say I am applying for fan club president. Why the application? Because you have to respect a player that puts forth effort to produce for a full 36 minutes and does it in an efficient way. Williams scored 23 points and did it on only 13 shots. Lovell also hit three triples and created eight assists for teammates. Add in the seven boards and defensive effort leading this team and you have a guy that has boosted his stock with a great year.
