Below is the first set of top individual performances from Saturday’s action at Mater Dei high school.
DJ Steward, Whitney Young
Steward had his explosive scoring ability on display as the Dolphins took down the host Monarchs, 67-57, ending Mater Dei’s 20-game Nike Extravaganza winning streak. The five-star combo guard headed to Duke finished with 21 points, while hitting on six of his 14 shots from the field and three from behind-the-arc.
Jahmai Mashack, Etiwanda
Mashack’s day was short, but efficient, as the junior scored 10 points with five rebounds and three steals in just 20 minutes of action. The 6-foot-3 wing continues to show why he’s considered one of the best on-ball defenders in the state and should be in that conversation among all west coast prospects and beyond. No perimeter player for Westchester scored more than points and Mashack defense was a big part of that.
Mason Hooks, Harvard-Westlake
Hooks was the most consistent offensive force for the Wolverines on the night as Bishop Gorman had little answer for his physicality in the paint. The 6-foot-10 center finished with a game-high 28 points, including 17 in the first half, on 12-for-14 from the field. Hooks’ performance came in a losing effort as the Gaels battled for a 74-70 comeback win, but the Princeton-bound senior was impressive nonetheless.
Bishop Gorman senior forward Mwani Wilkinson scored a team-high 20 points in the Gaels comeback win over Harvard-Westlake at the Nike Extravaganza.Mwani Wilkinson, Bishop Gorman
The Gaels were another team to erase a sizable halftime deficit and battle back for a win as they trailed Harvard-Westlake, 42-30, at halftime, but rallied to a 74-70 victory. The 6-foot-6 Wilkinson paced Gorman in the scoring column, finishing with 20 points on 8-for-12 from the field. The senior also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and came up with three steals.
Tyler Beard, Whitney Young
Beard did a little bit of everything in Whitney Young’s ten point victory over Mater Dei, finishing with a game-high 22 points to go along with six assists, four rebounds and two steals. The 6-foot-2 Georgetown-commit scored 14 of his 22 in the second half and connected on seven of his eight free throw attempts.
