As always, 8-time defending champions Bishop Gorman enters as the favorite. This year however the bracket is filled with challengers and quality prospects. In order to take home the crown, stars will have to be stars. In this article, PH takes a look at every team’s most important player.
Trey Stevens 6’1 SG Reed 2020 – Stevens has had a terrific year for Reed. The 6-foot sniper leads the squad in points, rebounds and assist. He has put up some big games this season, including 32 against Domante Ranch, 29 against River Valley and 27 against Douglas. He’ll need to protect the ball and have his outside stroke working if the Raiders are to advance.
Mason Whittaker 6’5 PG Spanish Springs 2020 (#42PHN 2020) – Whitaker has the perfect opportunity to make a name for himself this week. The versatile PG has put together a terrific season. He’s averaged over 18 ppg while shooting an amazing 39% from behind the arc. Whitaker has great size for his position and can handle, and disrupt off the bounce. He’s going up against Gorman and their pressure D. It’s going to be critical for him to limit turnovers, and to get some of his other weapons involved if SS is to pull off the upset.
Zaon Collins 6’0 PG Bishop Gorman 2021 (#2PHN 2021) (featured image) – Lost in the amazing performances of some of the other Gaels players during their Desert Region Championship run, was the performance of Collins. He has turned into one of the top pure PG’s in the nation. More than just an electrifying athlete, Collins is the engine that makes BG go. His handle, penetrating ability and passing has been off the charts in the playoffs. He was perhaps at his best in the Desert Region Finals, finishing with 14 points 5 rebounds and 10 assists. If he is on his game, it’s going to be difficult for anyone to knock off the Gaels.
Milos Uzan 6’3 PG Desert Pines 2022 (#1PHN 2022) – Uzan is looking to cap a tremendous season with a state title. He has nothing left to prove, as he’s shown the ability to control the tempo and pace of the game. He can create buckets for his teammates or for himself, and he has a great feel of when to do both. DP is a proud confident squad, unafraid of anyone. If Uzan shows up and plays the way he’s capable of, then they have a chance to leave Reno with the crown.
Anthony Hunter 5’11 PG Durango 2020 (#6PHN 2020) – “Tone” Hunter has put together a great career. He’s looking to cap it off with a state title. After a 6 win season last year, Hunter and the Trailblazers are looking to complete an amazing turnaround. Hunter can impact the game on both the offensive and defensive side. He will need to be at his two way playing best in order for the Trailblazers to take home the crown.
