This weekend saw several close games between good teams in Northwest Kansas. Here are some highlights:
Riley County evens the score with Rock Creek:
These two powerhouses went at it again, with Riley County avenging a double-overtime loss earlier this season and handing Rock Creek its first loss. Rock Creek’s Dawson Zenger was averaging nearly 30 points per game when the Falcons held him to just 4 in the previous meeting. This time Zenger got 13 (still well below his 26.5 average) but the balanced Riley County club came from behind in the fourth period.
Royal Valley escapes Nemaha Central threat:
Points were at a premium in this battle of top 3A teams. This low-scoring battle saw Royal Valley’s Nahcs Wahwassuck held to single digits scoring for just the second time this season. The 6-foot-4 sophomore tallied just 8, but the Panthers won 37-34.
2A beats 1A:
A top 2A club got the better of a leading 1A team when McLouth beat Valley Falls 62-47. Tayshawn Barfield led McLouth with 19, while Jerred Willits added 16 and Jaxson Pope 14.
And 1A beats 2A:
After a dramatic win over Lebo last week, 1A Madison knocked off a tough 2A team in Northern Heights. Chase Harrison, who scored 25, including the final bucket to beat Lebo, notched 25 again. Cameron Heiman put up his fifth 20-plus point game for Northern Heights, but his 24 weren’t enough to keep pace.
Sabetha gets by Jeff West:
Another battle that came down to the wire, Sabetha was led by its usual top threats. Gabe Garber scored 16, and Braden Argabright tossed in 12 in the 49-47 win. For Jefferson West, Bryce Clements and Bryce Neuenswander each had 14.
