Antwan Burnett, 6’5 SG, Sidney Lanier: The manchild was just that at the Garrett Coliseum during the Southeast Regional. Averaging 27 points and 14 rebounds in two games “AB” was a force in a win over Pelham in the semi-final game and the same in an OT loss vs. Eufala in the Elite 8. With his high school career now over be on the lookout for his announcement coming soon of where he will continue his basketball career.
Joshua “Greedy” Williams, 6’3 PG,Sidney Lanier: With a breakout junior season the crafty point guard showed a real ability to run a championship contending team. With him not in the game, the Poets really struggled in getting their offense going. His ability to direct traffic while handling pressure made this team so dangerous. His controversial charge call at the end of regulation in the regional final game with less than a minute on the clock that would have put the Poets up 2 with a pending free-throw changed the outcome of the game. With him out in the OT period, Eufala was able to make enough plays to end the Poets season.
Blake Floyd, 5’11 PG, Pelham: This sharp-shooting point guard showed a real ability to make shots while in Montgomery. Many of his shots taken never even touched the rim. He shot the ball effortlessly from deep and showed a tenaciousness on the defensive end of the floor. Though his team came up short in the semi-final game he put the region on notice of his abilities.
Kendan Maddox, 6’7 PF, Pelham: The big man is a monster on the post. Once he works to get his position on the block it is tough for defenders to do anything to stop him from getting his shot off or get himself to the free-throw line. His strong frame and willingness to play on the inside allowed him to have a very good showing in their only game.
Eiszeric Thomas, 6’4 PF, Eufala: The undersized post player motor proved to be too much as he leads the Tigers to the 6A final four. His relentless nature and will to win abled him to score 49 points in their two victories in the regional tourney. The senior though being slight of build was so impressive at getting position on the post that either led to a basket or one of his 38 free throws attempted in two games. His ability to control the paint was what ultimately got the Tigers over the hump.
Josh Paige, 6’1 CG, Eufala: With two huge three-point shots in the Regional Final vs Lanier late in regulation is what helped the Tigers overcome the Poets. With a bigshot from the right corner down 6 with under two minutes to go shifted the momentum in the Tigers favor. On the very next possession, he knocked down a dagger 3 from the right-wing that tied the game and ended up being the shot that forced overtime. In the overtime period, he went 4 for 4 from the free-throw line that ultimately put a cap on the victory for the Tigers.
Chad Chambers, 5’11 PG, Calera: “Duke” did what he does in his one game in Montgomery. His ability to put pressure on the defense was evident throughout their contest with Eufala. The high energy fast-twitch lefty consistently broke down the defense on his way to 21 points and six assists. The all-tourney performer gave his team every opportunity to win the basketball game the one thing all coaches want out of their lead guards. Be on the lookout this AAU season as he looks to light up the circuits.
