Continue ReadingWith the playoffs finally here this week, we break down each region to take a closer look at some of the top players by position. Big/Wing play will be a key in the playoffs and many of these teams have a number of different threats from those positions.
This piece will look into the top bigs/wings in the Chauncey Billups region that has teams like; (1) Rangeview, (8) Boulder, (9) Columbine, (16) Mountain Vista, (17) Fruita Monument, (24) Doherty, (25) ThunderRidge, (32) Arvada West, (33) Highlands Ranch, (40) Lakewood, (41) Dakota Ridge, (48) Chatfield.
Highlands Ranch – Tristan Hurdle & Ryker Cisarik
Hurdle and Cisarik are the top two leading scorers for Highlands Ranch this year, Cisarik averaged: 17.8 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 2.2 BPG and Hurdle was right behind him at, 13.6 PPG and 4.6 RPG and at 6’6 is able to stretch the floor as well, shooting 41% from deep on the year (43/105). Cisarik at 6’9 is also a player who has a soft touch on his shot and is able to keep the defense honest from deep, shooting 38% on the year (33/88). Highlands Ranch will be an interesting team to watch at the 33 seed and but would have a tough matchup with Rangeview if they win their first round game against Arvada West.
Fruita Monument – Ian Barnes
Barnes at 6’3 is second on the team in scoring during the regular season at 9.9 PPG and second on the team in rebounding at 6.4 RPG. He has had a couple double-doubles on the year and has been close to several others, he plays with a lot of energy and can effect the game in different ways on a nightly basis for Fruita. He does all of his work from inside the three-point arc, shooting 60% (90/151) during the regular season.
Chatfield – Chase Miller
Miller is a 6’5 sophomore for Chatfield who has played in all twenty-three games this season and will have a high ceiling going forward. He averaged: 5.9 PPG to go with 5.8 RPG and 1.0 BPG, during the regular season. His 5.8 rebounds per game led the team, he does a nice job of protecting the paint for the Chargers as well.
Boulder – Pete Boyle
Boulder has a number of different players who contribute on a nightly basis but, Boyle is the 6’6 big that holds down the paint for the Panthers. This regular season he averaged: 9.5 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 1.5 BPG, shooting 54% from inside the three-point arc. He does a nice job of protecting the paint for Boulder and is a big that can stretch the floor as well, shooting 30% from deep (32/105). He is also a strong foul shooter for a big, shooting 77% from the charity strip.
ThunderRidge – Nolan Marold & Tommy Crawford & Joey Biello
Marold is a 6’7 junior who led they way for ThunderRidge this year in both scoring and rebounding at, 11.0 PPG and 6.4 RPG. He is a major threat from inside the arc, shooting 55% from two-point range on the regular season. Crawford is another big body for for the Grizzlies, at 6’6 he is able to stretch the defense and shoot the three ball. He averaged: 7.0 PPG and 5.3 RPG playing in every game so far for them. Biello, a 6’7 sophomore has also played in every game this year and should be in for a big future ahead. This year he averaged: 5.5 PPG and 3.3 RPG.
Columbine – Justin Lohrenz
Lohrenz at 6’4 is the force down low for the Rebels, he averaged: 12.6 PPG, 6.3 RPG, doing all of his work from inside the arc. He has three double-doubles on the year and is a nice presence down-low to complement Luke on the outside and brings a physical nature to the game for Columbine being a DE/TE who has committed to Washington State University. He has played in sixteen of the twenty-three games for the Rebels and has scored ten or more points in nine of those games including seven in a row to end the regular season.
Doherty – Lucas Moerman
Moerman the 6’10 big man who is committed to the Air Force Academy next year averaged a double-double in the regular season for Doherty this year at 14.4 PPG and 10.6 RPG as well as 5.1 BPG. He is a force in the paint, shooting 61% on the year from inside the three-point arc. He has a number of different moves in the post and is a relentless rebounder on both ends of the court. His 5.1 BPG ranks third in the state which speaks to what kind of rim protector he is, he has good instincts and good timing. He also ranks fifth in double-doubles on the year according to MaxPreps.
