Beyond the Numbers
Louis Grante-Halliday Louis Grante-Halliday 6'6" | SG Eastside Catholic | 2022 State WA came into this season absolutely on fire. He had three double-doubles through his first five games including a huge 25 point, 16 rebound game against Franklin High School. At 6’5″ and 200 lbs, Halliday looks like he could play linebacker with just as much success as he has seen on the court, but even if he is a little more force than finesse, he has found success on a quality Nathan Hale squad. Halliday tried to battle through a hand injury this season, but eventually, it was enough to keep him from playing after January. Halliday has big plans for bouncing back from a season where he feels that both he and his team could have been more successful. “I want to develop the consistency of my jump shot and add more variations to pull-ups. This season I had a shooting slump, so this summer I will be working and focusing a lot on becoming a more consistent shooter again. I want to keep progressing over summer and play on a circuit team. I want to lead my team to the state tournament next year.”
As a sophomore, Halliday already appears to have a great understanding of the intricacies of the game. “I think on the court my greatest strength would be my IQ in knowing when to attack and when to make the right pass as well as my physicality inside against bigger players. On the court, I communicate with my teammates on both ends of the court to make sure we are on the same page. I think my decision making is very good and helps myself and my teammates as I can draw the defender and either kick or shoot the ball.” With his physicality, Halliday also understands that he is an important part of his team’s defense. “I see the rotations I need to make early and am able to get to my position early to stop the attacker.”
Although the season didn’t go as well as Halliday would have expected for himself or his team, he stands to benefit from the early experience. He’ll need to re-establish himself after missing part of the season with his injury, but during that time on the bench, he had an opportunity to watch teammates who have served as good role models for the player he wants to become. “I think my game is very versatile. I can space the perimeter as well as go inside against mismatch guards and work my way in the high post. I model my game after Devin Booker as he can also play multiple positions and is a very good catch-and-shoot player which is something I’m working on. I also like to attack the rim in transition, like him, with good change of direction at a fast pace.” Clearly, Halliday has lofty expectations for himself in the future, but he is off to a very impressive start. In what I’ve seen from him so far this season, Halliday strikes me as a raw talent with a huge ceiling. He’s bringing a wealth of natural athleticism to the court, and he’s committed to fortifying his game by working to improve his technical skills.
