Lawrence continues to dominate the Topeka tournament, having won it last year. The Lions have reached the finals of the tournament seven of the last eight years. Here are some highlights of day two:
1) Topeka West is the Cardiac Kids:
Back-to-back overtime wins? The Chargers did it. Sophomore guard Elijah Brooks led the way with 19. The Chargers had to come from behind both games to tie the score right before the end of regulation.
2) Sutton is king:
King Sutton scored 18 points against St. Marys after going off for 38 against Wichita Northwest. Sutton’s production was somewhat up-and-down early in the season, but he’s averaging 22 points a game over the past five.
3) HP’s big 3 battled against Lawrence:
Highland Park relies heavily on the production of juniors CJ Powell, Jahi Peppers and sophomore Juan’Tario Roberts. The three gave the Lions all they had. Powell led all scorers with 22, while Roberts and Peppers had 14 and 13, respectively.
4) Hayden gets a tough draw:
The Wildcats didn’t play Friday because school was canceled at KC-Washington, thereby canceling their trip to Topeka. So while the Wildcats got a night to rest, they are now forced to play Topeka High for fifth place. While the Wildcats have some height to throw at Sutton, they will be hard pressed to match the Trojans athleticism.
5) St. Marys is winless, but has impressed:
Former K-State guard Will Spradling is developing a scrappy squad at St. Marys. They took Topeka West to overtime in the first round, impressing Chargers coach Rick Bloomquist. They ran into trouble against Topeka High, but have a good shot at beating KC-Washington for seventh place.
