He stated that he wanted to give opportunities to as many local kids as possible and with his first class, it looks like mission accomplished. In this article, PH takes a look at the newly signed recruits to the College of Southern Nevada. (To view the complete interview with Russ Beck click here.)
James Webster 6’4 SG Spring Valley High School (#47PHN 2020) – Webster will bring slashing and perimeter defense. He’s a good run and jump athlete, that should find the bucket in transition and off strong drives. Good size to play the 2, at the next level, he will need to improve his outside shooting, and ballhandling.
Jahlani Blair 6’4 SF Spring Valley 2019 (#13PHN 2019) – When I sat down with Beck, he emphasized the importance of bringing in a couple older players to round out the squad. The one name he constantly brought up was Jahlani Blair. Coach got his man. Blair, the son of Spring Valley head coach Paul, and the cousin of current Running Rebel NIck Blair, starred for Spring Valley last season. A jack of all trade type player, he was 1st team all-conference averaging 15, points 11 rebounds and 6 assist for the Grizzles last season. His is truly an inspirational story as he has returned home in an attempt to uplift the city with his play on the court and his character off it.
Jaylon Lee 6’8 C Arbor View (#14PHN 2020) – Lee was a huge get for CSN, figuratively and literally. The wide-body post gobbles up rebounds and has more than enough talent to do the same at the next level. Right now, he likes to turn over his left shoulder and finish with his right hand. For him, a lot of his ceiling depends on health and conditioning. If he can manage to put together an entire season, you’re probably looking at a D1 guy in two years.
Larry Holmes 6’2 SG Arbor View (#29PHN 2020) – What Webster brings to the defensive side of the ball, expect the same from Holmes on the offensive side. Holmes is no slouch on the defensive side either. He is a terrific two way player with a 3 point shot and athleticism. Holmes another product of a talented Arbor View team, should be able to make a huge impact right away for coach Beck.
Nati Asfaw 6’5 PF Del Sol (#27PHN 2020) – So happy that Asfaw will be staying home to play. The 6’5 forward is a load. He’ll provide toughness, rebounding and interior scoring right away for CSN. The thought of having him paired with Lee is going to be downright scary, Asfaw is highly skilled on the block and he should get an opportunity to play his natural position of power forward for CSN.
Luis Avila 6’8 PF SECTA 2020 – CSN is the perfect fit for Avila. The 6’8 forward is a special talent. He can shoot it, and he puts it on the floor well enough to create shots for himself. He is going to need to improve his upper body strength, but he is a high IQ player with a ton of potential. In the past, a player like this may go unnoticed, which is why the creation of the CSN program provides a perfect opportunity.
