It was sold out for seven straight games with an awesome atmosphere and high level play on the court. Here we breakdown the prospects at the event with Highland Shootout: 2022 and 2023 Evaluations!
Jevon Porter (Father Tolton, MO – 2022)
This was my first look at the 6’10” Porter. The younger brother of the Denver Nuggets Michael Porter. Jevon has similar height, but his game is definitely more reminiscent of Jontay Porter. What we liked about his game was his size, length, and mobility around the cup. Finished well with soft hands inside. Feel scoring in the paint. Connected on a pick/pop three showing sound mechanics. Put it on the deck for an and-1. Several times he flew in from out of his area for rebounds. Played hard. Shot blocking presence defensively. Went for 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
Larry Hughes (CBC, MO – 2022)
This 6’4” son of the former NBA and St. Louis University star continues to impress us each and every time we see him perform. Hughes has a long and rangy build with big time shot making from beyond the three point arc. He drilled 4-7 from distance showing a lighting quick release off the catch. Smooth all-around player that is very projectable toward the next level. He had 16 points on the night.
Robert Martin (CBC, MO – 2022)
Martin is a smaller point guard at 5’10” that runs the show for CBC. He shows leadership skills at a young age and a feel for passing the basketball. Gets dribble penetration and can score around the rim despite his lack of height on scoop shots. Struggled shooting from deep. He had 4 points and 5 rebounds.
Tarris Reed (Chaminade, MO – 2022)
Reed is a very intriguing prospect in our eyes. The 6’8” sophomore has broad shoulders and a frame that is impressive for a young post. He started off slow, but then got things rolling in the second half. Reed used an array of quick post moves and hook shots for scores in the paint. Flashed solid footwork, skill, and power around the hoop. Even put it on the deck for a left handed drive and finish. Solid rebounder on both ends. Like the potential here. He had 9 points (4-11 FG) and 6 rebounds.
Damien Mayo (Chaminade, MO – 2022)
Mayo is a player that we had numerous people give us a heads up that he is one to watch moving forward. The 6’2” sophomore definitely showed some intriguing tools. Plus athlete that can score from multiple levels including going 2-4 from distance. Got to the rim for a scoop shot and a layup off a steal. Solid passer that isn’t a point guard at this stage, but you could see potential for development there. He had 11 points (4-7 FG) and 3 assists.
Jaylen Drane (Simeon – 2022)
Drane sets at the #2 overall spot in the PHI 2022 rankings. Wiry scoring guard that can rack up buckets in a hurry. Started the game off with a pair of threes. Also hit a mid-range jumper. Slick transition scorer that can get to the cup in the open floor. Starting to showcase his all-around game at the point guard spot. Chance to be a plus defender down the line. He had 10 points (4-8 FG).
Jalen Griffith (Simeon – 2023)
Griffith is one of the most exciting young guards in the state. The playmaker is a crisp ball handler with speed in the open floor. Sometimes can get sped up too fast which leads to turnovers, but he will learn in time. Had one spectacular layup that had the crowd going crazy!
Dalen Davis (Whitney Young – 2023)
Davis is a high IQ young point guard that makes sound decisions with the ball in his hands most of the time. His passing feel is what stands out at an early age. Made a couple strong passes to his teammates including one for a Steward three. He didn’t score, but had 2 dimes on the night.
Cade Altadonna (Highland – 2023)
We had seen Altadonna in some camps and playing with the Illinois Bears during the summer a little, but it was quite impressive to see the young guard be the best player for a varsity basketball team as a freshman. This lefty point guard is crafty with the ball in his hands being able to get in and out of the defense for scores including and-1s. Sound three point shooter that can also stop and pop from mid-range. Had a knack for drawing fouls and getting to the charity stripe. Great outing from the host school freshman point guard going for 22 points (6-14 FG).
