“It just felt like the best decision [for me]” Cortes told Prep Hoops on Monday. “I loved it down there, the coaches made me a priority and it felt like a great fit.”
Cortes, standing about 6-foot-2-inches, helped to lead Kingfisher to a 4A State Title in 2019, its second in three years.
“About two weeks ago,” Cortes said, “I knew I wanted to make the decision.
Cortes said the in-state dynamic was indispensable to his decision.
“I’ll have a good support system and I also believe that I can get better here,” Cortes said.
Cortes followed his Team Griffin teammate, Jaxson Robinson (Texas A&M) as the second player in the Oklahoma 2021 class to announce his commitment in the past week. He was relieved to make his decision, he said.
“I mean, I enjoyed the recruiting process and all,” Cortes said, “but I was happy once I got it over with.
“I also believe I made the right decision so it made me feel even better,” Cortes continued.
Cortes’s parents, Yobany and Mariana, were “really supportive” of his decision, despite growing up in a traditionally Cowboys-leaning family.
“I was supportive of [OU and OSU] growing up,” Cortes said, “but I grew up going to OSU football games.
“I’ve spoken to [my parents] a lot about this,” Cortes added, “and they believed that it was also a great fit and they love Norman.”
Cortes has thus-far led the YellowJackets to a perfect record; one of only four undefeated marks in the state (Braggs, Fox and Pawnee).
With Cortes’s commitment joining Robinson’s, the eyes of the state fall now upon Cortes’s Kingfisher teammate, Matthew Stone (Oklahoma State, Tulsa) and Team Griffin teammate Trey Alexander (Oklahoma, Oklahoma St., Arkansas) for their respective decisions.
