Manhattan: 6-0, ranked 2nd in state 6A
No one player really stands out. They just win, and they do it in dominating fashion. In perhaps the biggest game in Kansas thus far, the Indians got by 5th ranked Free State 51-49.
Highland Park: 4-1
Highland Park has three dynamic scorers in CJ Powell, Juan’Tario Roberts and Jahi Peppers. They can play as fast as anyone. Their lone defeat came at the hands of Topeka West.
Washburn Rural: 3-1
The Junior Blues lost in overtime at Topeka High. They probably rely too much on Joe Berry. But their win over Emporia looks impressive.
Emporia: 4-2
Their loss to Hesston is less than impressive. But they offset that disappointment by beating Topeka West right before the break. Charles Snyder has been impressive thus far.
Topeka High: 3-2
The Trojans have athletes to spare, so the head-scratching loss to Hayden is hard to comprehend. Their other loss was to Liberty of Missouri. They have perhaps the best player in the league in King Sutton, but his production is inconsistent.
Topeka West: 1-1
Snow wiped out one of their contests, so their two games played cancel each other out. The win over Highland Park is impressive, but they also lost to Emporia. Sophomore Elijah Brooks is special.
Junction City: 1-3
They Blue Jays opened with a win over Dodge City, and took Highland Park to overtime. They kept their meeting with Manhattan relatively close. There is hope for growth here.
Hayden: 2-3
Losing Ryan Braun’s 21 points a game to graduation hurt. They have great senior leadership in John Roeder but lack an explosive threat.
Seaman: 0-4
Last year’s trip to the 5A sub-state final seems eons ago. The return of Eric Patterson from injury has helped, but not enough.
