East Rock puts the pressure on
The East Rockingham Eagles came out fast in their game against the Floyd County Buffaloes, jumping out to an early 12-point lead at halftime, 37-25. Things slowed down in the second half, but Floyd continued to struggle shooting, making just eight field goals across the two quarters. They shot 31.9 percent from the field for the game. East Rock, on the other hand, shot 43.5 percent from the field. While neither team shot it particularly well from 3-point range (6-of-32), East Rock still found a way to get a victory in the end 59-51.
Tyler Nickel leads the way for East Rock
East Rockingham forward Tyler Nickel showed why he’s considered a top prospect in the 2022 class of Virginia with his 19-point, 8-rebound and two-block performance against Floyd. He played on all three levels for the Eagles, knocking down one 3-pointer and getting to the free-throw line for 11 shots, making eight of them. He’s a versatile forward to watch on both ends of the floor.
Tyce McNair stands out
Another standout for East Rock was 2020 senior guard Tyce McNair. McNair was another leader on the offensive end alongside Nickel, finishing with 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists in their victory over the Buffaloes. He’s an unsigned prospect drawing interest from a few colleges in Virginia’s ODAC region.
2022 wing Josiah Banks is one to watch for Floyd
Josiah Banks is another young sophomore wing prospect for Floyd County with tons of potential. He poured in 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor and 1-of-2 shooting from 3-point land to go along with four rebounds despite the loss. Banks battled through foul trouble throughout the game but managed to finish the game with just four fouls. He didn’t let the foul trouble get to him too much given his final numbers.
2023 Kaiden Swortzel another Floyd prospect
Freshman forward Kaiden Swortzel made just four field goals for Floyd but he also managed to go 11-of-17 from the free-throw line, creating havoc in the post. The 6-foot-4 forward will be one to watch as he learns to stay out of foul trouble on the other end.
