Game Recaps
vs. Monsignor Bonner – 12/26
In their first game of the Governor’s Challenge, the Trojans fell 81-71 to Monsignor Bonner (PA) though it wasn’t due to the lack of effort from VCU commit Josh Banks. Banks led all scorers with 28 points but it wasn’t enough as Monsignor Bonner saw their whole starting five finish scoring in double-figures. Strength in numbers came back to haunt the Trojans as they were outscored in the paint 44-40.
vs. Elizabeth – 12/27
Olympic took their second loss in the 2019 Governor’s Challenge to the Elizabeth Minutemen (NJ) 65-62 on Day 2. Things went cold for the Trojans in the third quarter as they only scored seven points as a team and never fully recovered in the fourth quarter. Again, the paint proved to be their Achilles’ heel as they were outscored 36-24.
vs. Dulaney – 12/28
Olympic finished better than they started the Governor’s Challenge, taking home a win over Dulaney (MD) 73-68 behind a strong performance from Josh Banks once again. Banks finished with 36 points while shooting an efficient 15-of-21 from the floor in the victory. In this one, the Trojans won the battle in the paint 54-34.
Prospects to Watch
2020 Josh Banks – Forward
Josh Banks looked like the standout prospect we’ve come to know in this year’s Governor’s Challenge, putting together games of 28 points, 19 points and 36 points to walk away with a scoring average of 27.6 points per contest. He also averaged 6.0 rebounds as well. He’ll be fun to watch the rest of the year and at VCU at the next level.
2021 Travon Williams – Guard
Travon Williams is an underrated athlete at the guard spot for Olympic. Williams is a solid combo guard that can distribute just as well as he can score. He produced 18 points and nine assists against Monsignor Bonner in arguably his best performance of the Governor’s Challenge. He finished averaging 17.3 points, 6.3 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game for the Trojans in this year’s Governor’s Challenge. He holds an offer from Lees-McRae.
2021 Isiah Golden – Guard
Isiah Golden is a sharpshooter in the backcourt for Olympic. He made a total of seven 3-pointers across their three games in the Governor’s Challenge. Golden shot 6-of-8 from the field and 3-of-5 from the 3-point arc in his best game of the Governor’s Challenge. He’s a small guard at 5-foot-8 that’s aggressive scoring the ball when it’s in his hands. He’s worked well in the backcourt alongside Banks and Williams.
2023 Kyre Bishop – Point Guard
Kyre Bishop is another prospect at the point guard position to keep an eye on. He’s young, but he showed growth at the point guard spot across Olympic’s three games in the Governor’s Challenge. He didn’t score a lot of points but his ability to control the pace and run the offense stood out more than anything else. In his best performance, he put up four points, five rebounds and three assists against Elizabeth. As he learns to get involved on both ends more, he’ll be a prospect to watch on this squad.
