Gretna goes on a big run in the 3rd quarter
The James River Knights led 24-19 at halftime but Gretna came out with different plans in the second half, going on a 24-10 run in the third quarter to turn things around in their favor. The Hawks shot the ball 11-of-18 from the field (61.1 percent) in the third quarter while James River went cold, making just four field goals after shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half. As the pressure was turned up by Gretna, things turned around in a big way. In the end, Gretna pulled out a 59-48 victory.
Isaiah Griffin nearly pulls a triple-double
6-foot-1 guard Isaiah Griffin was all over the floor for Gretna in their comeback victory against James River. The 2022 guard finished the game with 17 points, 14 rebounds (6 offensive) and seven steals for the Hawks. Griffin was impressive playing on both ends of the floor with his endless motor and knack for attacking the rim. He also dished out four assists.
Mekhi Reeves snags a double-double
Griffin wasn’t the only player having fun running around the floor for Gretna. 2021 forward Mekhi Reeves finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and three assists for the Hawks in their win. He’s a 6-foot-4 prospect that can handle the ball and isn’t afraid to attack the basket and finish in traffic.
Three players finish in double-figures for the Knights
On the positive for James River, they had three of their starter five finish scoring in double-figures. Ryan Steger (2023) led the way with 16 points while Patrick Clevenger (2022) finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists and Everett Bowman (2022) finished with 10 points, three assists and two rebounds. They’re a young group that showed good chemistry and didn’t give up after losing the lead after the half.
Ryan Steger is a freshman to watch
James River didn’t get a victory in the end, but their early lead was due in part to the shooting of 2023 guard Ryan Steger. Steger opened the first half with nine points on 2-of-4 shooting from the 3-point line. He finished the game 4-of-11 shooting from the 3-point arc with 16 points. As he gains more experience on the varsity level, he’s a sharpshooting guard to keep eyes on in the Three Rivers Conference.
