Here were 10 observations from the three games I viewed:
#1 Mountain Pointe freshman/soph groups have some nice potential to help their varsity next year.
#2 Three freshman from Mountain Pointe stood out in the freshman game.
Jayven Price PG 5’6 Mountain Pointe
-The nephew of head coach Price and younger brother of former Pride stud Khalid Price is a very quick PG with a tight handle. He can shoot it from the 3pt line and step back on his defender and hit from mid-range. His ability to create shots can help him when he’s older.
Aiden Price SG 5’8 Mountain Pointe
-Another nephew of head coach Price is more of the pure scorer. The lefty has real speed and has a background in football and lacrosse and just started playing full time in 6th grade. He has deep range on his jumper and can fly in the open court. His first step is quick and has obvious upside.
Syre Cole PF 6’2 Mountain Pointe
-A thick football kid with great length and big feet. He is another that just started picking up the game. He can dunk it, shoot the 3 plus rebounds and blocks shots.
#3 One soph stood out from Mountain Pointe in the JV game.
Tanner Pate SF 6’2 2022 Mountain Pointe
-Pure shooter off the catch and can create a little for himself. He has a nice handle and although he has a slender build he can get into the lane and score it. He also seems to have a nose for the ball in the passing lanes and collects steals with his IQ and awareness.
#4 One soph stood out from Queen Creek in the JV game.
Keegan Bunker PG 6’0 2022 Queen Creek
-A really good feel for the game can use either hand to score it inside. He is a good passer and makes plays for others. He is deceptively quick and patient with the ball in his hands.
Varsity game:
#5 My first time seeing the Bulldogs and they have some nice pieces with Preston Thompson, Calvin Gustafson and Yoann Djassa to play around Thorson.
#6 The Bulldogs Raydon Thorson is one of the best passers in the AIA.
#7 The Pride have some nice pieces to go along with their top players that can upset a team or two with Anthony Jaramillo, Miles Sulka, TJ Tigler and Q’Bon Sullivan.
#8 Zereoue Williams is one of the best rebounders in the AIA.
#9 Jason Kimbrough Jr is one of the best on-ball defenders in the AIA.
#10 Here were the Varsity standouts:
Mountain Pointe 84 Queen Creek 66
Raydon Thorson PG 6’1 2022 Queen Creek
-Pure PG is a really good passer. He makes reads where he is a step ahead of even his teammates. He is extremely shifty and is changing speeds constantly. He has a pretty pull-up off the dribble and creates his own shot. He is a good catch 3pt shooter and really shows an all-around game. He can cut down on his turnovers, but he is the only ball handler on the team, so his usage is obviously very high.
Jason Kimbrough CG 6’0 2021 Mountain Pointe
-A very quick on-ball defender will hound his opposing guards up the length of the court. He is very quick with the ball and has a nice pull-up off the dribble and a floater. Good passer in transition and is more of a scorer at this stage then that pure PG.
Mark Brown PG 5’10 2023 Mountain Pointe
-A powerfully built and talented freshman. He can pull-up off the dribble from mid to the 3pt line and gets to the cup easily. He uses his super tight handle and body/stronger frame to carve up space and score. He can take body contact and score through it. He made many very good subtle passes to make others better.
Zereoue Williams PF/C 6’7 2021 Mountain Pointe
-A big time rebounder. He is definitely one of the best in state. He seems to have stick-em on his hands at times as he grabs everything in and out of his area. He also has impeccable timing to block shots. He has a polished hook shot with either hand and has wider shoulders with great strength.
