The 2019 Terry Porter Classic will serve as a litmus test for some of the state’s top teams.
Prep Hoops Wisconsin lists six prospects to keep an eye out for, as they hope to help their squad leave with a victory. The competition will take place on Friday night and Saturday at Milwaukee South Division High School.
Kelly didn’t play at all last year (eligibility issues), but he now seems to be in a better position to get some minutes after transferring to Milwaukee Vincent.
When Kelly puts on a jersey and starts playing, there are no questions about his abilities. The 6-foot guard is an impact player on both ends of the court. He has tremendous athleticism on defense and a quick trigger shot on offense. Kelly has all of the tools.
The question will be if he can use all of these tools in the right way. If he can, then the electric guard will become a really high-quality basketball player.
Ronja’s brother, Rashad, is also a prospect to watch out for this weekend.
Milwaukee Vincent will play Brookfield East on Friday night at 6:00 PM.
Hayden Doyle is coming off a state championship season, not in basketball, but in football. Doyle was a key player for Brookfield East during their run to Camp Randall.
What does this have to do with basketball? It proves that the 5-foot-11 guard is a winner.
Doyle is more than happy to accomplish all of the dirty work that is necessary for his team to get in the win column. I would call Doyle a ‘glue guy’, but that seems like it would be ignoring his true skill. He can shut down the opposing team’s best scorer while still putting up points of his own. He has a knack for creating separation on offense and has truly become a great defender.
Doyle will look to guide Brookfield East to a win on Friday when they play Milwaukee Vincent.
Tre Valeriano 5’10” / G Milwaukee Washington
Michael Foster Jr., Tre White, and Chianti Clay Jr. all left Milwaukee Washington this offseason. The Purgolders went from competing for a state title to barley being talked about in the Division 2 championship race.
On Friday, Tre Valeriano showed that Washington’s title hopes were not destroyed after the departures of last year’s star players. Valeriano put up 25 first-half points to lead his team to a monumental victory over Milwaukee Lutheran.
MW will look to roll this momentum over to Saturday when it takes on a tough Marquette team.
Aiden Flynn is the main obstacle that stands between Milwaukee Washington and another win. Flynn is a really unappreciated prospect in the Wisconsin high school basketball community. The 2020 forward averaged 17.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game as a junior. Now, a senior, Flynn is coming back improved.
Saturday’s tilt could wake up a lot of spectators to Flynn’s talent. And if it does not happen on Saturday, then it is bound to happen at some point later in his senior season.
It has all already been said about Patrick Baldwin Jr. We all know that he has one of the best jump shots in high school basketball. We all know that he is capable of putting up huge numbers. We all know that every college in America would swim across the ocean if that meant that Baldwin would play his college ball at that given school.
I’ll keep this brief: If you have not yet watched Patrick Baldwin Jr. play, check it off your bucket list this weekend.
The top prospect in Wisconsin will be in action on Saturday at 6:30 PM.
Ben Nau 6’1″ / PG Brookfield Central
Ben Nau’s older brother, Cole, had a fantastic season during the Lancers’ state championship run. Cole is still playing basketball, but he has graduated from Brookfield Central. He is now a freshman at Hillsdale University.
Cole’s graduation immediately shifted the weight to the shoulders of Ben Nau. For Brookfield Central to successfully defend 2019’s Gold Ball, Ben will need to be at his best.
A good early-season measuring stick for Nau’s readiness will come on Saturday when Central plays Milwaukee Madison.
