Continue ReadingThe Tarkanian Classic came to a close on Saturday. The event, honoring legendary UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian, brings together hundreds of the top Prep programs in the nation. Event organizer Dinos Trigonis, a legend in his own right does a tremendous job of putting together fan-friendly matchups. The event featured 8 different divisions spread out over several courts throughout the city. In this article, PH takes a look at some of the top Underclassmen participants from the Tarkanian Classic
Sebastian Mack 6’1 SG Durango 2023 (#1PHN 2023) – Mack grew up fast in this tournament. He missed two free throws with 1 second left that would have won the game for Durango in the semifinals. Instead of hanging his head, he showed his maturity by knocking down a key 3 and two free throws in the overtime. He showed that he is ready to make an impact at the Varsity level, and this tournament may just be the catalyst to a big second half of the season.
Jared McCain 6’2 SG Corona Centennial 2023 – What is left to say about McCain? The freshmen phenom was absolutely brilliant all week. Whether he was burring 7 3’s in the first round or knocking down a cold-blooded dagger shot in the Championship game, the freshmen never got rattled and showed the poise and confidence to be a key contributor for the Platinum bracket Champs.
Max Toombs 6’1 SG Corner Canyon 2023 – Max played spot minutes for the reigning Utah 5A champs. He played his role well providing perimeter defense, and ballhandling. Toombs even showed the ability to knock down the occasional mid-range shot en route to helping Corner Canyon reach the title game of the Select bracket.
Donavan Dent 6’1 PG Corna Centennial 2022 – Dent was huge in the Championship game. The speedy sophomore did a terrific job of handling against Gorman’s pressure defense. He showed the ability to get into the lane and finish in transition. The backcourt of Dent, Paris Dawson and McCain was successfully able to attack the Gorman pressure for scores in the second half, helping Corona extend their lead and eventually win the title.
Fabio Basili 6’3 PG Oak Ridge 2023 – Fabioooooooo. Basili has a handle that should be on mixtapes. Quick change of direction guard, with a wiggle that froze defenders all week. His ability to free himself from defenders and quickly launch 3’s reminds you of another #30.
Amari Bailey 6’4 SG Sierra Canyon 2022 – What can you say that hasn’t already been said about Bailey? The lefty guard showed why he’s one of the top players in the class of 2022. He posses elite level frame, explosiveness, and fast-twitch muscles.
Milos Uzan 6’3 PG Desert Pines 2022 (#3PHN 2022) – When watching Uzan play, it’s easy to forget that he’s only a sophomore. The PG has complete command of his team. He showed the ability to get by anyone he wanted all week. It wasn’t with lighting quick athleticism, but rather subtle COD’s that froze defenders just enough. He is an elite floor general, capable of willing his team to victory.
