Event organizer Dinos Trigonis, a legend in his own right does a tremendous job of putting together fan-friendly matchups. The event features 8 different divisions spread out over several courts throughout the city. In this article PH takes a look at the top break out performances on the day.
Jared McCain 6’2 PG Corona Centennial 2023 – McCain firmly cemented his name as one of the best Freshmen on the West Coast. Over the course of a 8 minute stretch in the 2nd half, he buried 4 consecutive 3’s. He knocked down 7 in all to help Corona Centennial to a narrow victory over a good Neumann Goretti squad.
Glenn Taylor 6’5 SF Cheyenne 2021 (#4PHN 2021) – College coaches are really starting to take note of Taylor. He was his usual do whatever it takes self today. He scored, created and probably had 15 rebounds. Cheyenne wasn’t victorious but it wasn’t for Taylor’s lack of effort or production.
Dayshawn Wiley 6’3 SG Desert Pines 2021 (#10 2021) – Wiley started the game like he was shot out of a cannon. He had 3 thunderous dunks in the first half that set the tone. Wiley used his run and jump athleticism to go toe for toe against a Mayfair team featuring some of the best athletes in the Classic.
Brandon Porter 5’9 PG Roosevelt 2020 – Porter was great on both sides of the ball. He defended his position, and continuously made plays for his team. The jitterbug PG broke down defenders, drew two and delivered on time and on target passes to teammates.
Harold Yu 7’3 C Sierra Canyon 2021 – I double checked and Yu is still 7’3. His sheer size is a deterrent for any attacks on the basket. On the offensive end he has a nice touch and shows the ability to finish from 5 feet in. Sierra Canyon is loaded, however it is telling that he started and played the majority of the game.
Fabio Basili 6’3 PG 2022 Oak Ridge 2022 – Basili is a player I must see more of. He has a tight handle and showed the ability to create space all game. He showed no signs of fear against the aforementioned Sierra Canyon squad. Basili routinely activated his change of direction and knocked down shots from distance. He finished with a hard earned 19 against one of the best teams in the country.
