Continue ReadingOne of the top sophomores in the state is an emerging talent from Tuscola in Jalen Quinn that stands at 6’2” with length at the point guard spot. He displays a quality burst with the ball in his hand with quick acceleration to the basket. Smooth ball handler with creativity that is able to get where he wants on the floor pretty easily especially against the level of competition he is going up against during the high school season. Has a runner game which he shoots with his off hand. Quinn is actually ambidextrous with his left hand being his primary shooting hand from deep. He uses his length defensively to get steals taking them the other way for scores. In the open floor he has a nice burst blowing past defenders with relative ease. A bit of a streaky shooter from three at this point. Solid looking lefty stroke with room to get even better. Like the way he rebounds it especially offensively with his quick second jump. As a passer he displays advanced vision and feel hitting shooters right in the pocket and throwing bullets to post players inside. Defensively he gets in passing lanes for steals that he takes coast to coast. Walls up inside using his length vertically on players trying to score through him forcing difficult shots.
PHI caught up with Quinn to chat about the first part of his high school season.
“It has went great. We had a late start compared to the other teams, but we are off to a great start. We are only improving from here. All of my teammates and me are ready to work day in and day out. We are always wanting to push each other in practice and coach always has a good game plan every week for the team we play. I think we are going to get better over the season.”
How does he feel that he has played from an individual standpoint?
“I think I am playing pretty good right now. I am never satisfied on things. Trying to get better all the time. One thing I have excelled at is my three point shot. I have worked on it a lot over the summer and the past year. Just trying to play a bigger role this year and help my team win games.”
The sophomore broke down his game and strengths as a player.
“I would say I am a pass first point guard that likes to get my teammates involved, but also can get to the rim when I need to and I can shoot pretty good. Overall I like to get my teammates involved and play defense and help them win the game.”
His recruitment is starting to pick up! Recently he had an SEC program in to check him out.
“I had Missouri in to watch me practice. I got to meet the assistant coach and talk with him a little bit. I don’t really know too much about their program. It came out of nowhere, but I am looking forward to getting to know them more over the course of the years and create a better bond.”
What other schools are involved early in the process?
“I have had Illinois, Purdue, and Eastern Illinois a little bit. I have been on a visit to Illinois and Purdue recently. Great campuses, great coaching staffs, and great teams. They have big futures. I like that they are trying to get me and I am blessed to have that opportunity.”
Purdue has got Quinn on campus multiple times already and it looks like the Boilermakers will be involved heavy in this recruitment.
“I went to their elite camp where we played all day and did skill stuff. A month ago I went up to Mackey when they were playing Jacksonville State. I got to go on the court and get shown around the campus. I got to watch the game and talk to the coaching staff. They talked to me and showed me what is required for players. It was a really cool experience for me.”
Illinois is only a short drive from Tuscola. The Illini have hosted Quinn and are keeping tabs on him as well.
“I went to Illinois football game against Wisconsin. I got to watch some of that and then they took us over to the practice facility to show us around. I got to talk to the coaching staff and watch them practice. See how they get to do things every day. It was a really good learning experience. I have been talking to with Coach Coleman. He keeps in contact with me and my coach a lot. He is really good about keeping in touch with us. Illinois is a big role in Tuscola. I grew up watching them ever since I was a little kid. Seeing them grow having down years and now this year they are coming up. I really like the coaching staff and team they have this year. They are looking really good.”
In the preseason 2022 rankings update Quinn sets at #12 overall with the arrow pointing up! Quinn will run with the Illinois Wolves this spring on the UAA circuit.
