Shumate transferred over to Bloom from Plainfield East for his final year of high school and has been the ultimate utility piece for the state’s top team. He is an elite athlete that plays with a high motor and impacts the game on both ends of the floor. What you have to like most about him is the intensity he brings to his team. Offensively he plays above the rim, can put it on the deck in the open floor, and has an emerging mid-range game. Defensively he can switch on almost any position and is a major shot blocking presence. PHI caught up with Shumate to get the latest on his recruitment.
“DePaul has been hitting me up. I just talked to Tennessee Tech. They are showing a lot of high interest. I like that coach. New Mexico hit me up recently.”
The Blue Demons were four deep for his game at the Chicago Elite Classic. What schools have offered that are currently pursuing him the most aggressively?
“Southern Utah has been showing me a lot of love after they offered me. Western Missouri recently offered and want me to come. Other than those two there are a lot of other schools that are showing a lot of interest.”
Other schools that have been showing varying levels of attention include SIU-Edwardsville, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Cal State Fullerton, and North Dakota State. What have schools been impressed with by his early season play?
“They have been saying they love my motor. A lot of schools are looking for the things that I do. Rim protectors and rebounders even though I am a little undersized for that position it is something I just do naturally throughout the game. That is what they are looking for. Someone that plays with a motor and is efficient scoring. They like that in me.”
Shumate currently sets at #20 overall in the PHI rankings, but expect that to climb with the way he is playing early this season!
