It featured six total games including an epic third place game and Bogan taking home the title in the championship. Here we look at the best performances we saw in Proviso West Holiday Tournament: Sunday Standouts.
Bryce Hopkins (Fenwick – 2021)
The Louisville commit might have had the best single performance we have seen in the almost 100 games we have evaluated this season. He put on an epic show for the ages in the 3rd place game against Zion Benton. Hopkins went for 44 points and 17 rebounds. Oh yea he also drilled the game winning pull up three as time expired. The big bodied playmaking forward did absolutely anything he wanted all night long. Was shifty in transition going downhill to the basket. Crafty in the lane with the ball knowing how to make difficult layups. Crashed the offensive glass for put backs. Sound perimeter shooter that can knock down threes at a higher clip now than at any point in his career. For as much scoring as he did he was also excellent passing the rock finding teammates cutting to the basket and in the open floor. No wonder why so many schools wanted to lock him down early!
Trey Pettigrew (Fenwick – 2022)
Pettigrew was quite a Robin to Hopkins’ Batman. The top 10 sophomore did a lot of his damage running out for scores in transition. Burst with the ball in his hands. Easy acceleration going to the basket blowing past defenders. Recorded a lot of layups in a 19 point outing!
Amar Augillard (Zion Benton – 2021)
Augillard matched Hopkins shot for shot early on in their matchup. In many respects Augillard is similar to Hopkins with his body type and physicality that he brings to the table. The 6’5” junior drilled an array of deep jumpers throughout the game including a huge one late where he was fouled. He is definitely a solid shooter, but his biggest asset is his ability to get downhill using his over powering strength. Improved his ball handling in tight spaces which allowed him to make more of his drives. Augillard had 33 points and 6 rebounds.
Floyd Bailey (Zion Benton – 2020)
Bailey is a 6’0” point guard that can really shoot it off the catch. The ZB lead guard was money shooting it from three knocking down an array of triples for 22 points.
Antoine Bloxton (Bogan – 2020)
Bloxton is one of the more electric players in the Chicago area for sure. The wiry 6’2” two guard scored a lot of his points early off his defense. Created turnovers with his pressure on Morton’s ball handlers and then took his steals the other way for layups or dunks. Speed in the open floor. Hit several sweet pull up jumpers in the second half including multiple deep threes. Bloxton is an exciting player that scored 33 points in the championship game.
Ideary Mooney (Bogan – 2020)
Mooney is a big bodied post prospect that used his girth against a much undersized Morton team. The senior rebounded on the offensive end for put backs and converted through contact in the paint. He had 11 points.
Mannuel Rodriguez (Morton – 2020)
Rodriguez did everything he could to keep his team in the game. The 5’10” point guard banked in a runner, but almost all of his other damage came from three. Moves well without the ball finding opening is the defense that are vacated. He goes there and lets it rip from three when he gets the ball. Made a handful of them for 20 points.
Kendell Nichols (Morton – 2020)
Nicholas is a 6’3” rangy forward that has to play as a versatile big for this undersized team. Brings energy, runs the floor, and finishes around the cup. Even hit a three en route to his 14 points.
Zach Miller (Hyde Park – 2020)
Miller is a prospect that we were impressed with over the summer for Full Package. The lefty stands at 6’3” with a solid build. He was outstanding shooting the basketball from the perimeter against Larkin. The sniper drilled five threes in the game. Quick release off the catch that was most effective from the corners. Small colleges would be wise to take a look at Miller who netted 18 points in a win.
Damari Wheeler-Thomas (Larkin – 2022)
This was my first look at this Larkin sophomore guard. At 5’11” the point guard made consistent trips to the foul line where he knocked down his shots from the charity stripe. Solid perimeter shooter drilling a pair early in the contest. Used his speed in transition and flashed some athleticism. Pesky on ball defender that put pressure on opposing guards. He had 26 points.
Jeffery Oakley (Perspectives – 2021)
Oakley is one of the bigger sleeper prospects in the junior class. The 6’5” small forward broke out with Team M.O.R.E. this summer and has continued his play into the start of the season with several huge performances. Oakley continues to improve as a shooter knocking down two of them to start the game. He is at his best using his long and rangy frame getting out in transition. Long strides cover a lot of ground and he takes quality angles to the hoop. Several times he got steals and took them the other way for layups or mid-range shots. Rebounds well for a wing. He had 21 points.
Kendale Anderson (Leo – 2020)
Anderson is such a beast! The 6’6” big man looks like a college defensive end with his grown man strength. He did a nice job in his matchup with the much taller Kyle Thomas of using his power game to go through him and draw fouls on the talented sophomore. Anderson finishes dump off passes and gets second chance points on the glass. Excellent at clearing space. Had a huge tip dunk that left the rim rattling for a while! One of the best rebounders in the senior class. Went for 14 points and 8 rebounds. JUCO’s should be all over him.
Bryce Coleman (St. Joseph – 2023)
Coleman took his game to another level on Sunday. The 6’3” freshman has been very solid every time we have seen him flashing potential. This was his breakout game in our eyes. He came off the bench and impacted the game on both ends of the floor. Tough wing defender that has active hands and got several steals. Excellent wing rebounder that had multiple put backs. It was his shooting that caught our attention. Free and easy release and let it go with a ton of confidence. Knocked down an array of threes. Pretty good handles at a young age. Trending as one of the better freshman in the state early in the process. He had 22 points.
Jakobi Heady (Hillcrest – 2021)
Heady wasn’t quite as good as he was a few weeks back at Team Rose, but still showed flashes of his immense upside. Long and rangy 6’6” small forward that can play some small ball four as well. Converted a couple of junk plays around the hoop. Slashes for runners and hit a three with a ton of arc on it. Length plays well on the defensive end getting in passing lanes. He had 13 points.
