On Saturday, we had the opportunity to drop by practice at Sunset, Westview, and Canby and here’s a look at some of the top players we saw.
Braeden Sato (2020 Sunset) – Sato has a great case for being the top shooter in the Class of 2020, especially if Saturday’s practice was any indication. He was nailing shots left and right from long and mid range and converted a few floaters as well. Sato’s release is so effortless and he very crafty in creating space to get off shots.
Colby King (2020 Sunset) – King is a bit of a matchup nightmare with his combination of height at 6-foot-4 and brute strength. He attacked the basket and was near unstoppable when he got close to the rim, showing the ability to finish with both hands. King didn’t shoot from the outside a lot in the time we watched, but his stroke looked good.
Tate Reese (2021 Sunset) – A key contributor directly from the JV squad, Reese has great length which gives him the ability to rebound and defend but also can step out and drain open jumpers. According to Sunset head coach Todd Sherwood, the junior may not be finished growing. He’s still a bit slight of frame that that strength will come.
Jalen Grable (2021 Westview) – Grable is arguably the best run-and-jump athlete in the Metro League as he can easily jump from a standstill and dunk it with two hands. In drills he ran the floor well, hit the boards hard, and largely focused on getting teammates involved as he’s a good passer from the top of the key.
Brady Grier (2021 Westview) – There have been times when we’ve seen Grier and he wasn’t having a good shooting day, but that wasn’t the case on Saturday. The 6-foot-4 wing was draining catch-and-shoot and off-the-dribble jumpers, utilizing his size to shoot over smaller defenders.
Diego Arredondo (2021 Canby) – Canby has a loaded junior class and Arredondo leads the way. We didn’t see a ton of game-type action but from what we saw of Arrendondo, he’s quick off the dribble and has a nice-looking jumper from the outside past three-point range. We are looking forward to seeing him more this season.
Ben Bailey (2021 Canby) – We got a brief look at Bailey at the PrepHoops Expo where he impressed with his size/frame and ability to shoot mid-range baseline jumpers. At practice, the lefty showed a little more range on his shot on the wings and also some pretty good ball-handling skills for a player his size.
