Matt Nicholson, a 7’0″ senior from Clarkston, deserves to have his name mentioned with the candidates for this award. In his sophomore season he played limited minutes on Clarkston’s Divsion 1 state championship team. Last year Nicholson became a focal point for his team. In his senior season he continues his rise up the prospect rankings in Michigan and will one again be the leader for Clarkston. Thry have a lot of depth and young talent, and Nicholson has a chance to lead them back to a state title.
Nicholson showed a ton of improvement over the spring and summer. He played with The Family on the Nike EYBL circuit. Nicholson played 12 games in the EYBL, averaging 6.1 ppg, 5.7 rpg, and 1.2 bpg.
The star post player has a lot of talent and potential. He’s considered by most as a 3 star prospect and will be taking his game to Northwestern after this season. Nicholson can control a game defensively. He’s constantly blocking and altering shots and doesn’t allow many clean looks at the rim from the paint. Nicholson is a solid rebounder, aided by his 7’2″ plus wingspan. He is a constant threat for put back buckets. Nicholson is underrated as a post passer and he can initiate the offense with a post touch.
Nicholson has always been a team first player that is willing to sacrifice and do what his team needs in order to be successful. Well if he has a stellar season and Clarkston competes for a state championship, the Mr. Basketball award may be on the horizon.
