The day 2 action did not disappoint as several standouts stole the show. In this article, PH takes a look at some of the standouts from Day 2.
Sam Mitchell 6’4 SF Payson 2021 (feature image) – Mitchell is a prospect, I’m not sure what level, but he can play somewhere. Showed off the quickest release in the tournament. It’s in his hands and then it’s through the net. He was an absolute stud all day, leading Payson to a quarterfinal victory.
Dominique Clifton 6’2 SG Eldorado 2021 – Eldorado got win #1 for coach Walton. It seemed as every time I peeked my head into the gym, Clifton was doing something spectacular. Either flushing it on someone or knocking down a 3 the junior guard was electric all game finishing with 26pts
Martell Williams 6’2 SG Silverado 2020 (#7PHN 2020) – The king is back. Williams showed why he is one of the top players in the state. He imposed his will on a gritty Basic team. He showed no ill effects of an ankle injury from the previous day, en route to finishing with 26 as the Skyhawks advanced to the Semifinals.
Nick Valencia 6’4 PF Mountain View 2020 – As it currently stands, Valencia is my MVP. The 6’4 manchild has been unstoppable through 2 games. Today he led the Toros to a furious comeback against a game Faith Lutheran squad. For a guy that big he has the softest hands and the most nimble feet. He showed the ability to dominate inside and step outside and knock down 3’s.
Jaylen Berry 6’2 PG Basic 2021 – Basic reminds me of one of those old school teams that may lose the game but always wins the fight. Berry is the perfect example of that. The junior PG was virtually unguardable all game. He used a variety of moves to get to the cup, and displayed an ability to finish with both hands. They lost the game, however his 30pts kept them in it.
Andrew Garcia 6’0 Legacy 2021 (#20PHN 2021) – Garcia is a natural scorer and he showed that on this day. Give credit to coach Tarango, even though they were the host team, he challenged them to play two games on the day. Garcia was up to the challenge burying big shot after big shot for the team. Ultimately the Longhorns fell short in the quarterfinals, despite a game effort from the lefty shooter.
Kendall Burrell 5’10 PG Bonanza 2020 (#35 2020) – It was great to see Burrell get his grove back. One of the state’s best scorers, showed why as he put up 27 on the day including knocking down 4 3’s.
Jermal Pittman 6’2 SG Clovis East 2020 – Big-time players make big-time plays in big-time games. Enter Pittman, he made key play after key play to help Clovis East secure a frantic come from behind victory. The senior guard was unstoppable driving to the hole and his squad needed every one of his 21 points.
Tommy Newton 6’1 SG Clovis East 2021 – What Pittman started Newton finished. The junior sharpshooter knocked down several key 3’s late, keeping the team in the game His 4th quarter spurt helped bring Clovis back and propeled them to victory, and a place in the semis.
