In this article, PH takes a look at some of the potential tournament MVP’s. If you’ve followed my work, you know I place a high emphasis on winning so this should also provide some insight into what teams I believe will find success.
Martell Williams 6’2 SG Silverado 2020 (#7PHN 2020) – Williams got his season off to a good start with a double-double and a victory against Eldorado. His sheer ability to put the ball in the basketball makes him a viable MVP candidate.
Nick Hopkins 6’5 SF Aquinas 2021 – Hopkins is already off to a monster year. This tournament could serve as a coming-out party of sorts for him. With his ability to stuff the stat sheet, Hopkins is one of the odds on favorites to walk away with MVP honors.
Sheldon Grant 6’3 PG Aquinas 2021 – Aquinas possess a devastating 1-2 punch. If Hopkins doesn’t beat you, you still have to contend with Grant. The oversized PG is a high IQ player that orchestrates the offense. Even if Hopkins puts up big scoring numbers, Grant is a viable MVP candidate because of his leadership and playmaking ability.
Riley Fornerette 5’11 PG Dysart 2020 (#77 PHA 2020) – Fornerette could win the MVP on flash alone. A high-level jitterbug that consistently gets paint touches, Fornerette has the ability to feed his teammates for easy shots. If his ability to control the tempo translates to wins for Dysart then expect him to be in the MVP running.
Harlan Nichols 6’4 PF Palo Verde 2020 (#36 PHN 2020) – Nichols is considered a sleeper, however I wouldn’t be surprised to see Palo win it all, and for him to walk away with MVP honors. For one thing, the Panthers return 4 experienced starters. Secondly, he plays so hard that it is difficult to imagine a situation where he doesn’t impact the game. Finally, because of the way the Panthers are built with shooting and playmaking, Nichols should face a ton of single coverage. I’m really looking forward to watching him this week.
Kade Madsen 6’2 SG Palo Verde 2020 (#18 PHN 2020) – Madsen is one of the rare players in the field with the ability to carry his team. A big, strong, physical athlete, Madsen has the ability to create shots for himself and his teammates. He’s one of the best pure shooters in the state, and if he starts seeing the ball go in, then watch out.
Jermal Pittman 6’2 SG Clovis East 2020 – The Timberwolves are going to be one of the favorites in the field. This has a lot to do with the exploits of Pittman. A high wire act, that scores well in transition, Pittman is probably a couple of memorable plays and 1 big game away from being one of the leading MVP candidates.
