The game ended lopsided, yet didn’t have the feel of a true blow-out until the fourth quarter. Point being, we were able to learn about prospects for both teams.
To set the context for our scouting notes, here’s a quick game description:
Program mismatch. Upper Arlington runs a more sophisticated show that involves complex offensive sets involving a lot of screening and motion. Westland’s talent and energy allowed them to hang tight but ultimately they relied on their players to create shots that didn’t come easy — hard to sustain for 32 minutes. Game was played in the halfcourt.
Quinn Corna (2022) | 6-3 SG | Upper Arlington
stats: 23 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists
Corna went into half with seven points. Then, he found a rhythm. There was nothing Westland could do with from then on.
He’s a go-to scorer type with a bit of an unorthodox, yet efficient, game off the dribble. Corna shakes defenders with jab steps and quick one- or two-dribble moves. Comfortable pulling off on those quick jukes coming down-hill and he creates a lot of separation sometimes. Quick, low shooting release — again, very effective nonetheless.
He forces his matchup to defend the entire floor. Corna pretty much never stands still. He constantly curls around screens and back-door cuts. The game is a long-distance event for him with a couple of sprints mixed in there to change the pace.
Magnus Entenmann (2021) | 6-8 PF | Upper Arlington
stats: 14 points, 2 rebounds
First of all, Entenmann has rare length and feel for the game at 6-foot-8. He combines those attributes to defend the post extremely well, constantly denying post entries tonight. When he has the ball on the perimeter or block, he sees the floor extremely well. Knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, which is pretty typical for the skilled big. Impactful defender on the perimeter, too, as he chased Eric Panning all over the floor and closed down potential catch-and-shoot opportunities.
Entenmann did not finish well and doesn’t score a lot off of one-foot inside, rather gathering with two-feet before going up. Any of his weaknesses, though, seem to be a product of youth. His potential is high and I feel strongly that he should be recruited at a mid-major level this summer.
Eric Panning (2020) | 6-8 PF | Westland
stats: 7 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks
Panning’s shooting stroke and light feet at 6-foot-8 really stand-out. Unsigned senior. He’s a borderline scholarship kid because of his agility and skill-set.
Very natural shooter who showed that he can effectively attack a close-out tonight. Put it on the floor several times, once finishing on a crafty euro-step to avoid a charge. Also added a drive-and-kick to the opposite corner. Good touch. Panning tallied three blocks, all coming in one-on-one defensive situations at the rim. His length is a factor on defense. Got caught out of position a few times while playing help-side defense. All in all, an impressive night for the intriguing stretch four.
Fred Wilkes (2020) | 6-0 PG | Upper Arlington
stats: 11 points, 2 rebounds
Wilkes displayed a nice skill-set as soon as he checked in, keying their first-quarter offense. Got all the way to the rim several times and consistently finished in traffic. Showed creativity with the ball in the air. Smart pull-up in transition. Also displayed his IQ as a passer, especially with on-time drive-and-kick reads. Wilkes can pressure the ball on defense. Very nice showing.
Sohn McGee (2022) | 6-3 combo guard | Westland
stats: 12 points, 2 rebounds
McGee handled pressure as their primary ball-handler and shot it very well. If he continues to shoot it like he did tonight, McGee will make a name for himself quickly. He’s the only guy they can trust to get it up the floor and the sophomore created space with crossovers. Scored a contested pull-up going into the baseline. McGee has a chance and we’re excited to watch him again.
Drew Panning (2022) | 6-4 SG | Westland
stats: 3 points
Drew Panning has the makings of an efficient wing scorer. The tall guard plays confidently off the bench. Showed good rhythm on his one-dribble pull-up and floater. Streaky shooter right now. Showed some shift on a pull-back dribble that created separation. Played good team defense and his size is an asset on the perimeter.
