With many basketball players still competing in their fall sport, this opened up some opportunities for younger players to step in and show what they can do. Lets take a look at the freshman and sophomores that were impressive at Saturday’s league.
Chandler Meeks – 6’0 Guard – Omaha Westside Class of 2022
Chandler Meeks is shifty playmaker that is tough to stay in front of. The sophomore guard also brings effort and versatility on the defensive end. As difficult as it is to stay in front of Meeks when he has the ball, it might be even more difficult to get around him as a defender. Chandler uses his feet and his strength to keep his matchups away from the basket. Meeks is a strong ball handler that can break down defenders and squeeze through gaps to create opportunities for himself and others. In his first contest of the day against Lincoln Pius X, he consistently knocked down midrange jump shots after beating defenders with quick crossovers. Compared to today, Meeks may see his number of shots in the regular season decrease slightly due to Omaha Westside’s talented senior class, but he appears to be ready to make a big impact entering his sophomore season.
Josh Dix – 6’4 Guard – Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln Class of 2022
Dix is a big guard that can run an offense and shoot for anywhere on the floor. With one of the top prospects in the 2021 class, Jadin Johnson, transferring to Millard North, Josh Dix should see a major increase in his roll, especially as a ball handler. In his second game of the day against Papillion La-Vista South, Josh impressed in many aspects of the game; he rebounded well, found teammates running in transition and cutting in the half-court, and knocked down open 3-point shots. If he continues to improve at attacking and finishing at the rim, Dix is going to be a problem for opposing teams in Iowa for years to come.
Tate Odvody – 6’0 Forward – Elkhorn South Class of 2023
Tate is a fluid and versatile wing that looks comfortable playing against bigger and older players. He showed no hesitation in his morning slate of games to make aggressive moves to the rim and finish with both hands. What most impressed me about Odvody’s game was his quick decision-making and vision. Tate made extra passes to open shooters, strong entries to the post and good passes in transition after securing rebounds. He might not see much action as a freshman for Elkhorn South, but Tate Odvody is a name you will hear more as his game and opportunities continue to grow.
Josiah Dotzler – 6’0 Point Guard – Bellevue West Class of 2023
Josiah Dotzler is a long athletic point guard that keeps defenses on their heels. Dotzler plays with a great pace, keeps his head up to find teammates running in transition, and pushes the ball up the floor off rebounds and made baskets. With most of Bellevue West’s upperclassmen unavailable for the pre-season final, Josiah got to run the offense for the day. He knocked down open shots and his tempo lead to easy baskets for himself and teammates throughout the morning. The freshman guard has great footwork around the rim and numerous finishing moves. Even on a Bellevue West team with a lot of upperclassmen talent, Josiah should be able to work himself onto the floor at some capacity this season.
