With so much of the game focused on the guys that score the buckets, I wanted to shift gear and show a little love to the truly unselfish. In this article, we take a look at the top 5 assist leaders in Nevada.
(1) DJ Turner 5’11 PG Shadow Ridge 2021 (#45PHN 2021)
Numbers: 6.0 Assist Per Game
Position Type: Pure PG
Play Style: Penetrate and Kick
Turner is never going to hurt his team. An unselfish pass first PG. Turner uses his speed and quickness to get paint touches and collapse the defense. He has been consistent on the year. If you take away his 2 assist game against San Luis, he is averaging nearly 7 per game.
(2) Meshack Hawkins 6’0 SG Chaparral 2020
Numbers: 6.0 Assist Per Game
Position Type: Combo Guard
Play Style: Slasher
“Shack” has one of the most unique play styles in the city. He is a two-way athlete that plays the game with a football toughness. The ball is in his hands a ton and he takes advantage of it. Hawkins is a terrific decision-maker who gets a lot of his assist once defenders are forced to double him. He has been consistent with his distribution throughout the city with his lowest effort being a 3 assist game.
(3) Donovan Yap 6’4 SG Arbor View 2020 (#4PHN 2020)
Numbers: 5.9 Assist Per Game
Position Type: Scoring Guard
Play Style: Pure Scorer
Yap is one of the best pure scorers in the state. He is the only player, I’ve seen this year that was able to go bucket for bucket with Julian Strawther. You can question if he’s a point guard or a 2, but what I see him as is a guy that can put the ball in the hole. Much like Hawkins his assist come from the threat of his scoring ability. Every team he faces is set to load up against him, his ability to deliver on time and on target passes to his teammates is what increases his total.
(4) Kade Madsen 6’2 SG Palo Verde 2020 (#18PHN 2020)
Numbers: 5.1 Assist Per Game
Position Type: Combo Guard
Play Style: Athletic shooter
Until you watch him play, I don’t think you realize just how good of a run and jump athlete Madsen is. A lot of his assist comes from his ability to get out in transition. Madsen is also a shooting threat, and his ability to show the ball and drive, allows him to increase paint touches. He’s been consistent with his passing all season, having 4 games of exactly four assist on the year.
(5) Joseph Summer 5’11 PG Carson 2021 (#26PHN 2021)
Numbers: 5.1 Assist Per Game
Position Type: Pure PG
Play Style: Savy playmaker
People in Vegas may not be as familiar with Summers, however, he is one of my favorite players to watch on the summer circuit. His skill set has carried over to his high school season. Summers, can organize the offense, make the easy pass, and make plays for his teammates. Another one of those guys whose threat of scoring, opens up opportunities for teammates. Summers is averaging nearly 22 per game on the season.
