Millennium remains to top seed in 5A, despite having a lesser record than some of the teams on the list. If you’re questioning the reason behind that, look at Millennium’s schedule. Their only two losses came from some very talented out of state teams. Against AZ teams, they are undefeated and I think they could potentially remain undefeated throughout the regular season. Millennium still remains as the top seed in 5A.
#2 Gilbert 7-1
Gilbert keeps things rolling off their state title run last year and comes back reloaded and looking good! They have a hugely impressive win over Sunnyslope, which is why they are a step above them in the rankings. Coach Caserio has this new squad rolling and believing that they can repeat as 5A state champions despite losing his two best players from last year’s squad.
#3 Sunnyslope 7-1
Slope came into the season really high on my watch list. The pure size and athleticism of their team is ridiculous and I thought that they would pose a huge problem for teams. So far, that is exactly what they have done. Their only loss came from Gilbert, which is why they come in at #3. However, Sunnyslope did have a very impressive win against Ironwood, a team that swept them throughout region play last year.
#4 Ironwood 7-1
Ironwood has really done some impressive stuff thus far into the season. They have beaten solid squads such as Cactus Shadows, McClintock, and Apollo. However, Ironwood did drop a game to Sunnyslope, so that’s why they come in at #4 for now. I do believe that once Ironwood has their transfers available, they will quickly rise to the top of 5A and will avenge their loss against Sunnyslope.
#5 Sunrise Mountain 7-2
Sunrise Mountain has come out and done pretty much what I expect from them. They are a really solid squad all around and are very well coached. Their only two losses came from two of the best teams in 6A, Skyline and Mountain Pointe. Skyline is one of the toughest teams in state as well. Sunrise should continue to be in the top 5 from here on out until region play. That’s when things get really exciting and rankings shake up!
