NBA Stylistic Comparison: 2013 Pistons Brandon Jennings
College Projection: D2+/LM-
Morrell is a 6’0″ point guard. The outside shot, while passable, lags behind his expert slashing.
His foot speed is staggering. Martin dashes around the court smoothly. Change of direction is special. Reminds of a young Jordan Bone (Ensworth/UT/Pistons G-League).
Blessed with a dazzling first step, Martin chops his way through gaps like a young running back Warrick Dunn. Martin dances like a guard who invented “ladder drills.” The feet are key to his entire game. For whatever Q is able to grow his game into it will be immeasurably more potent because it all happens faster. His feet are debilitating for on-ball defenders.
Martin glides around the court with the fluifitu of a YMCA gym rat. This is a guess, but he probably grew up around parents, uncles, or older siblings or all who played a lot of hoop. There is a poise, a creativity that reveals hours of in-person watching and absorbing of the sport.
Needs to use his body on defense more. Continue to develop upper body strength and lean on the chest and the feet to keep attackers out of paint. Quicks can’t be his only physical asset defensively. A little power on top of quick pegs makes a nice guard defender.
Good bball I.Q.
Martin’s weaknesses are few. Outside shooting and shooting off the dribble need constant work. He isn’t bad or even poor, but his shooting can become lethal and unlike his dribbling and slashing it isn’t elite just yet.
The 6-foot-2 wingspan is decent not special for a guard. He stands approximately 6-foot-0 with average-sized hands and size 13 shoes.
He plays with a high motor and even though he can score double figures in Class AAA, Martin can evolve into more than a scorer.
Don’t expect Q Martin to settle or stagnate. He is obviously willing to put in the work and very few guards are more advanced entering their sophomore season.
