That certainly was the case for Kelton Herrick. The steady 5-foot-11, 145-pound guard from West Linn really focused on improvement in one area of his game that will pay off for the Lions this year, but also garnered some attention from some college programs with one school currently standing out for him.
During AAU season, Herrick ran with Team Fly Perrault and he couldn’t have been happier with how it went. “It was a really good experience just traveling around and going to all these tournaments, especially the ones in LA as I played well at those,” Herrick said. “I was not much of a shooter before the summer and I feel really confident in my shot now.”
Through his increased confidence in his game, college programs at the D-III level took notice. With a weighed 4.0 GPA and 1320 SAT score, it’s the type of attention that was right up his alley.
“There were some tournaments where we had some coaches on the baseline watching and I’ve talked to some like Pomona and Westmont,” Herrick said. “During the summer I also reached out to Chapman, as that’s a school that I’m interested in going to and playing basketball. In September I flew down there and went to their elite camp and talked to their coach and they’re really interested in me.”
Herrick went into more depth what he’s looking for at the next level. “I’m really looking to go out-of-state for college because I want to get some new experience outside of Oregon,” Herrick said. “I’m really drawn to the California schools. I’ve got good grades and Chapman is one that is realistic for me to get into. I really like the campus and I know a couple of people that have been there like my best friend’s sister and she loves it and is always trying to convince me to go there.”
Things will certainly sort itself out with his college recruitment during the season, one in which Herrick is really looking forward to. “I think it’s going to be really fun,” Herrick said. “V’s a great coach and we’re going to have a great season. We’ve got a lot of guys that like to play with each other so it will be a lot of fun.”
Herrick currently ranks as the #100 ranked player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
