Class AAAA Preseason First Team All State
Jalen Suggs, Minnehaha Academy (Sr).
My Instant Memory – The difference in the player Jalen was as a sophomore at state versus the player Jalen was as a junior at state. As incredible as it sounds, it was a massive difference So if he improved that much between those years, what’s next?
Dawson Garcia, Prior Lake (Sr)
My Instant Memory – Seeing Dawson completely dominate other players on this list, and it’s multiple. He’s a much better defender than people realize, and he can score on players in whatever way is needed.
Kerwin Walton, Hopkins (Sr)
My Instant Memory – Seeing Kerwin defend and make shots at state. I recall being curious about what his three-point percentage was for the year and when I saw “48.6” I was shocked as that’s amazing for a Hopkins player.
Dain Dainja, Park Center (Sr)
My Instant Memory – Dainja go head to head with Ben Carlson and Dawson Garcia this summer. Dain’s ability to score on anybody, and often times doing it with a physical agility, it’s at times amazing.
Chet Holmgren , Minnehaha Academy (Jr)
My Instant Memory – Watching Chet limit Zeke Nnaji to terrible shooting numbers in the game I watched last year. Hopkins won, and Zeke is right now playing at an elite level at Arizona, and Chet defensively controlled him. Amazing to me.
Class AAAA Preseason Second Team All State
Ben Carlson, East Ridge (Sr)
My Instant Memory – Watching Ben thinking this guy could average 30/20 but his team is so balanced. When Ben played Dain this summer I thought all around Ben was better. This could be an amazing season now that Ben will nearly double his touches.
Gabe Madsen, Rochester Mayo (Sr)
My Instant Memory – Realizing that Gabe had grown a few inches and then seeing him somehow move even better. Gabe is way more explosive than I think people know with the skill to put up numbers.
Tre Holloman, Cretin-Derham Hall (Soph)
My Instant Memory – The impact that Tre had on a team last year. When he was energetic his team was. When he wanted a patient possession his team followed. When Tre was loud on defense they all were.
Camden Heide, Wayzata (Soph)
My Instant Memory – Seeing Camden as a freshman play early in the year, I didn’t have a roster and he was still somewhat new to my memory. I saw Camden hit a couple shots, defend in good spots, and finish above the rim. My first thought was “transfer?” and then I realized how mature the freshman looked. More is on the way which is why USA comes to ask him to play.
Drake Dobbs, Eden Prairie (Sr)
My Instant Memory – Drake playing 16u with an ultra talented team and his group was down like four baskets. With high major players all around him it was Drake that attacked a top Adidas team’s heart and won the game.
Class AAAA Preseason Third Team All State
Nathan Heise, Lake City (Sr)
My Instant Memory – My new memory for Nathan is seeing him play at Gopher Team Camp, seeing Oturu and Carr jump up and down running around saying Nate should be a Gopher. Heise is damn good and UNI got a steal.
Steven Crowl, Eastview (Sr)
My Instant Memory – Steven playing in Las Vegas in late July in a game that seemed more on the “we have to leave the fun to play?” and then Steven’s defense and effort changed the entire mindset of the team.
Jacob Hutson, Edina (Sr)
My Instant Memory – Hutson simply not allowing anybody to post up on him. Anywhere. Any type of game. Guys would try to cross the lane and Jacob forced them out of a wanted position. They would cut down and try to sit but he forced them off the block. This is a position battle winner almost all the time.
Charlie Katona, Shakopee (Sr)
My Instant Memory – Watching Charlie go head to head with high major players in Atlanta and outplay them on both ends. Katona flipped a switch in late April and hasn’t allowed anybody to flip it back.
J’Vonne Hadley, Cretin-Derham Hall (Sr)
My Instant Memory – The many different ways that I watched J’Vonne score last winter at an event in STMA. It seemed like his 30 came from the most well spaced game of Around the World that I have seen.
Prince Aligbe, Minnehaha Academy (Soph)
My Instant Memory – Prince is playing with two guys in Suggs and Chet who are very likely early pros. So how do you fit in? Prince was active off ball scoring on cuts, chasing down loose balls, and simply working to support his entire freshman year.
