Baltimore County Preview: Headlines Entering the 2019-20 Season

We are now less than two weeks away from Baltimore County Public Schools officially beginning practice. With that being the case, it's time to take a look at some headlines that are of conversations entering the 2019-20 season.

Is New Town equipped to repeat as champions?

The Titans experienced quite the roster turnover with the handful of seniors they lost. They also lost a key transfer in 2021 6-foot-9 forward Julian Reese. Nevertheless, they still have two key pieces in Martaz Robinson and Andrew Mills. The 2020 duo played critical roles in last year's run and both will be expected to produce even more this season. Mills, the reigning Baltimore County Player of the Year, is a versatile 6-foot-5 wing that can score inside and out. He'll be responsible to be an anchor defensively as well with their lack of size. Robinson is a 6-foot-2 guard with good feel for the game. His role will change with the expectations of becoming a consistent scoring presence. 2020 guards in Khyrie Johnson and Twan Carter will both need to be knockdown shooters and effective defenders. 2020 guard Stephon Marcano is a Coppin Academy transfer who will bring another scoring and play making presence off the bounce. This team won't be close to last year's team in terms of size, but they still have the skill and experience to be favorites.

Will Dulaney have enough?

Dulaney may have the best scorer in the DMV in 2021 Ryan Conway. Time after time again, Conway lit up the nets last season and carried it over into his AAU season with Team Melo on the EYBL Circuit. It would be no shock to me that Conway averages around 25 points per game this season. 2020 Cam Byers will take on more responsibility in the front court. At 6-foot-5 with brute strength, he is one of the better bigs you'll find in the county. He showed last year some ability to step outside and hit the three as well. The Lions will depend heavily on these two as the season progresses. Where Dulaney's fate rests is within their role guys. 2021 Jaylin Webster has shown steady progression as a guard who can play make off the bounce, hit three's and strap up defensively. 2020 Cole McGee will play next to Byers acting as the blue-collar guy. He'll need to be a presence on the glass, a guy who steps up and takes charges and a finisher around the rim. With Conway and Byers, you can never count Dulaney out, but again, their success will rest on the consistency of the role players.

Parkville loads up in attempt to make a run

The Knights experienced a turnaround season thanks to the 2020 duo of John Godinez and Jordan Strickland. The guard and forward both posted impressive numbers throughout the season and Godinez capitalized by finished second in the county player of the year voting. Strickland on the other hand, has cemented himself as a walking double-double. Both of these players return to the lineup, but that's about all you'll recognize. Parkville got a slew of transfers that include: 2021 Darrius Tilghman (City), 2020 Kahlil Dukes (Mt. Carmel), 2020 Alphonso Morrow (Mt. Carmel) and 2021 Malik Scipio (Mt. Carmel). Tilghman was the biggest name and the last addition made by the Knights a week ago. The 6-foot-3 lefty guard gives head coach Josh Czerski another dynamic play maker and scorer next to Godinez. Dukes and Morrow have potential to be impacts on the defensive end with their strength and versatility. Scipio is a downhill guard with decent size who can score from all three levels. They also welcome a talented freshman in Jayden Baker who is a 6-foot-4 wing that has a nice skill set for his age. The Knights certainly have the talent to make a run at the county crown, but putting it all together on the floor is a challenge. We'll see if they're up for it.

Milford Mill adds key transfers

After and uncommon down year last season, the Millers hit the transfer market and added some quality talent to their roster. 2022 point guard Sammy Scott comes in from City to bring a pass-first mentality as the floor general. 2021 Detwan Montague transfers from powerhouse St. Frances and will provide the biggest inside presence in the county at 6-foot-7. 2022 Andrew Rheubottom from Pikesville is welcomed and will act as a Swiss army knife on the wing with his ability to impact the box score in multiple ways. 2021 O'Meech Wilson makes the move from North County to join the Millers. At 6-foot-5 with impressive athleticism, it gives them an effective scorer in transition and versatility on both sides of the ball.

Franklin seeks revenge

The Indians lost in the county title game last season, but made a significant addition to help their chances in 2019-20. 2020 guard Chandler Johnson transferred in from Mount St. Joe and will supply Franklin with a dynamic scorer and effective defender in the back court. 2020 Ben Murphy returns after an impressive junior campaign that caught the eyes of many college programs. The 6-foot-3 guard can score from all three levels and is equipped with athleticism to help finish over the rim in transition.
