Loyola Academy’s juniors and sophomores won the varsity and sophomore titles after Georgia Tech took home the freshmen title. However, Wheeling’s Joe Jordan led all varsity scorers with 25 points on the day in a win over Glenbrook South’s juniors. At the Frosh/Soph level, David Van Hoy (Iowa) and Kaleb Bennett (Syracuse) scored 26 each to lead all players on Sunday. Final information on results and statistics can be found at ALL IN’s website
VARSITY HIGHLIGHTS: Week 8
Loyola Academy 64 Hoffman Estates 39
CHAMPIONSHIP (Varsity). A hot start by Loyola Academy’s juniors against Hoffman Estates, having to play back-to-back semifinal and championship games, was too much to overcome. No surprise, Scotty Dean led all scorers with 17 for Loyola while Nahum Smith-Hernandez registered 16 for Hoffman Estates.
Loyola Academy 61 Chicago United 46
Loyola Academy pulled away at the end of the first half and controlled tempo the rest of the way. Once again Scotty Dean spearheaded Loyola with 23 points. Chicago United’s Kordell Gordon and Vernon Henry each scored 12 in the first semifinal game.
Hoffman Estates 64 Niles West 63
The biggest upset of the day went to Hoffman Estates in the second semifinal game as they knocked off Niles West. A pair of 24-point games by Nahum Smith-Hernandez and Levent Sertesen led the way for Hoffman Estates. A strong fall for Niles West’s Andrew Pabst ended with his 19 point performance.
Chicago United 52 Maine East 47
Chicago United had the toughest road on the day, needing three straight wins for a championship. It started off well when the beat Maine East in the last quarterfinal game. Kordell Gordon had a game high 19 points for Chicago United as Maine East wasn’t able to connect from three like it usually does.
Ida Crown 49 Kansas 40
In usual team fashion, Ida Crown had 11 players score on its way to a win. Benny Albom and Josh Pogonitz led Ida Crown with 8 points each. Kyle McGovern led all scorers with 13 for Kansas.
Maine South 72 Chicago Lab UHigh 64
Chicago Lab sophomore Ryan Duncan led all scorers again with 19 points for the second week in a row, but Maine South and Casey Clark’s 18 points proved to be too much.
Wheeling 62 Glenbrook South 54
Wheeling’s Joe Jordan led all varsity scorers on the day with 25 points as Glenbrook South’s juniors dropped two in a row to end the fall. Justin Leszynski led GBS with 17 points.
FROSH/SOPH HIGHLIGHTS: Week 8
Loyola Academy 53 Glenbrook South 52
CHAMPIONSHIP (Sophs). Glenbrook South dominated for 47 minutes but was not able to hold on after Loyola ended the game on a 16-5 run culminating with a three by Bill Cody with 15 seconds left that proved to be the winning basket. Dajour Stephens once again led Loyola with 15 points while GBS’ Nathan Shapiro topped all scorers with 16.
Loyola Academy 56 St Ignatius 39
A flurry of 11 three pointers by Loyola Academy proved to be all they needed to win the second semifinal game. Dajour Stephens led Loyola with 19 points while Austin Toon scored 12 for St. Ignatius.
Glenbrook South 48 Illinois 46
Glenbrook South’s six man crew squeezed by Illinois in the first semifinal after holding a 23-19 lead at halftime. Brandon Ballarini scored 17 points for GBS, but Conner Dalton poured in a game high 23 for Illinois, including six threes.
Georgia Tech 52 Virginia 49
CHAMPIONSHIP (Frosh). Gaven Marr was relentless to the rim for Georgia Tech, scoring a game high 17 points. Virginia’s Nick Taylor wasn’t quite able to match, scoring 16.
Virginia 63 Highland Park 35
Virginia cruised through its semifinal game behind a 20-point effort by Nick Taylor. Sean Goodman finished with 17 for Highland Park.
Georgia Tech 53 North Carolina 51
Georgia Tech’s team effort was just enough to hold off 22 points by North Carolina’s Connor Mosele, who hit six three pointers. Seven players scored for Georgia Tech, led by Braden Lowitzki’s 12 in the second semifinal game.
Iowa 77 Indiana 58
David Van Hoy led all scorers on the day with 26 points for Iowa followed by teammate Donovan Nichols 18 point outing. Indiana’s David Nass had 16.
Notre Dame 53 Hersey 48
Notre Dame’s Brennan Moore and Jack Tzur were a two man wrecking crew, scoring 18 and 17 points, respectively. Sean Safford led Hersey with 13.
Miami 63 Syracuse 59
Big man Kaleb Bennett dominated the paint for Syracuse, scoring all 26 points around the rim, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Miami, who was led by Andrew Mann’s 19 points.
