Moving On: Lukas Theisen and Clifton Patterson were role playing wings that started some games for the Eagles because of their effort and activity. They graduated as did reserve John Brommel. Also absent from the team since the season was 6-foot-8 high potential frontcourt player Deng Diew. Deng would be a senior this season coming off an eight point per game year but we didn’t seem him play with his high school team or summer traveling team so who knows what’s next for him. Also leading the team was 6-foot-7 agile big Nasrudin Mohamed. Mohamed would of been a senior (and was the team’s fourth leading scorer a year ago) but he quit the squad. Will either be back in blue and red? Apollo beat a lot of good AAAA and AAA teams this summer without them so chemistry may have been built up with the quality players that competed this summer.
Returning Starters: Jalyn Williams, Logan Johnson, Michael Gravelle. Michael played the lead guard spot often playmaking in every way for the Eagles. He scored 18 a game plus started the offense. He’s a talented guard seen listed last year at 5-foot-7, 5-foot-8, and 5-foot-10. Whatever he is now, people have trouble keeping him in front. Johnson is your lunchpail worker four-men willing to play whatever role is asked while Williams was the fifth leading scorer a season ago.
Reserves Playing a Bigger Role: I was really impressed with what Chang Hoth, Thomas Diew, and Pouch Dobuol did for this team this summer when watching Apollo compete. All three played off the bench a season ago and all three should have big roles. Hoth was the team’s third leading scorer as a junior and now he’s a senior that should be a three point weapon. Diew is a good sized sophomore post at 6-foot-7/6-foot-8 who earned some varsity time as a freshman. Diew should give them good minutes off the bench and as he matures he could play a really big role sooner than later.
Potentials from the JV: Apollo has a couple quality sophomore guards in Dontae Horshaw and Kaiden Moua who aren’t big but did a solid job on JV a year ago. They along with junior Alex Hausmann should be able to provide back-up ball handling for Gravelle. At the wing spots junior Charlie Atkinson and seniors Mohamed Mohamed and Jack Hoth.
