Open Gym/Workout Report: Westview Wildcats/Sunset Apollos

Open Gym/Workout Report: Westview Wildcats/Sunset Apollos

This fall’s open gym/workout tour continued early this week with visits to two schools in another one of the Metro League’s big rivalries – Westview and Sunset. A few notable guys were missing due to football or other reasons most notably London Smalley and Keshav Anand (Westview) and Tate Reese (Sunset). Here’s a look at the top guys that caught our eye on both squads in the time we watched.

Jalen Grable (2021 Westview) - Grable, a tremendous run-and-jump athlete, was particularly impressive on the boards as he clearly plays above the rim. Offensively, he seemed a bit passive at first but started to get things going by nailing some three-point shots. We are still very impressed with his ability to pass from the top of the key, finding guys cutting to the basket for easy layups.

Brady Grier (2021 Westview) - Grier simply knows how to play the game offensively. The 6-foot-3 junior has advanced from being just a spot-up shooter to one that is able to create off the dribble and his body to overpower defenders near the basket. His strength actually seemed to be more the one-two dribble pullup fadaway mid-range shot, especially going to his left and it was something he was nailing the entire workout.

Wayne Jamison (2020 Westview) - Jamison was solid both with the basketball and without, looking to set up teammates before going into his own offense. He's one of the fastest players in the state going end-to-end yet he is able to harness it and play under control. Jamison shot the ball fairly well from three and was able to use his athleticism to finish at the hoop.

Braeden Sato (2020 Sunset) - Sato is probably the purest shooter in the Metro League. His stroke is so smooth and seemingly so effortless. He was nailing jumper after jumper in the shooting drills. The key this season for him is also effectively getting his teammates involved in the offense, especially when the shot isn't falling.

Colby King (2020 Sunset) - King didn't seem to have any ill effects from the torn rotator cuff he suffered. He also seems to have built quite a bit of upper body strength despite the injury. The 6-foot-4 lefty was hitting his mid-range shots pretty consistently and was also knocking down some threes as well.

Kell Estep (2021 Sunset) - Estep was hitting his jumper fairly consistently during drills. The 6-foot-3 wing has the ability to create his own shot as well, but it's his ability to knock down the open shots that will be key for the Apollos this season.

Jalen Childs (2023 Sunset) - Originally targeted for Life Christian, Childs is instead at Sunset and there's a good chance he could be playing varsity minutes. The 6-foot-3 freshman is blessed with an athletic body for his age and he really showed some bounce during the time we watched. He has a fairly nice looking stroke on his shot too.
