Halloween Hoops Standouts
This past weekend was a great look for the Vegas valley as a number of key prospects were on display they showed up and showed out at the 9th annual Halloween Hoops at Coronado HS. Fan’s, basketball writers and scouts alike were treated to a tremendous show by very talented young men and women. Here are some of the prospects who benefited from a great tournament.
Tyrelle Hunt 6’5 Coronado G 2020 (#25 PHN 2020) – Hunt WOW’d his home crowd and had an excellent weekend. And I wasn’t the only person that thought so. Hunt made the All Halloween Hoops 4th team for his performance. Hunt made a living as a stretch wing. And was a walking bucket. The 6-foot-5 senior has an old man’s game. He wasn’t the most explosive athlete this weekend but he was the most effective. No matter where Hunt lined up on the floor, he went to work and scored at will. He always seemed to know where his sweet spot was. Along with that he always knew where the ball was. He displayed great court vision to find the open man in transition. You know it is cool when you had some fans chanting his nickname “Fat Daddy” his effort and game was certainly “fat.”
Amari James 6’3 PG Spring Valley 2020 (#19 PHN 2020) – James is a range less player. This kid is a pure marksman he can shoot and shoot at will. He’s deadly off the dribble. He can create space and rise up and shoot. I seen him early this summer and he had a game where he made 8 straight 3’s. This game was no different as he made multiple and consecutive 3’s again. James looks the part with a natural built at the position. He was a very willing passer and could be a splash brother if he wanted too.He is a young man that I predict will be on a lot of radars this season. He is Spring Valley’s returning leading scorer and will look to keep up his hot run on a very talented Spring Valley team.
Glen Taylor 6’4 G Cheyenne 2021(#4 PHN 2021)- He was the most versatile player I seen all weekend. He was able to play and guard multiple positions. Lakers once had a player named Lamar Odom that won NBA 6th man because of his ability to do everything. That was Taylor. He is an excellent ball handler. Extremely long and lengthy with crazy athleticism. His game is multi-faceted and his unselfishness makes everyone around him better. The most underrated trait in a player Taylor has, he is a great verbal communicator always trying to raise other’s performance. He is the lead by example type. His love for the game was undeniable. He recently received letters to the two premier schools in the state UNLV and Nevada. This weekend showed why.
Dayshawn Wiley 6’3 SG Desert Pines 2021 (#10 PHN 2021) – Wiley may be one of the most underrated players in all of the state. Sometimes it may be hard hard to stick out when you play with Milos Uzan one of the top players in all of the west coast and Darnell Washington who might be the best athlete in America. Wiley had an amazing weekend he was named 3rd team All Halloween Hoops. Wiley is an explosive athlete with the ability to play above the rim. He may have had the play of the weekend scoring on an inbound alley-oop dunk. Wiley is a blur in transition. And this weekend he was lethal off catch and shoots and in iso situations. As a sophomore he averaged nearly 14 per game. That average may creep up after this weekend. Wiley certainly made a huge name for himself.
Felix Reeves Jr 6’5 G Coronado 2020 (#16 PHN 2020)– Reeves did everything right this weekend. He was another young man who made 3rd team All Halloween Hoops team. He came up big in an overtime game this weekend finishing strong around the basket for a key AND1 play. His game is so dynamic. He can finish with either hand. He can finish with contact. Reeves is a pogo stick that can jump out of the gym. Reeves displayed a silky smooth stroke. He rewarded his team by knocking down open looks. His highlight reel this weekend comprised of several alley oops not only the ones he threw to teammates but once he threw down himself.
Mikey Medlock 6’1 SG Arbor View 2020 (#52 PHN 2020)– Medlock made everyone a fan this weekend. His name kept jumping out at me on Twitter. He was the player I felt made this biggest impact this weekend. These type of tournaments are made for players like Medlock who have gone under the radar. This will be a weekend he will never forget. He made shots at efficient rates. His number was called at some clutch moments and he delivered. He had a game this weekend where he dropped 34. That was the day before he hit a walk off game winning shot. This was the weekend of Medlock.
