The term “Diaper Dandy” was made famous by legendary college basketball analyst Dick Vitale. A diaper dandy is a term that defines a sensational freshman basketball player. Basketball is a generational sport and in order for it to grow its future needs to be bright. For every Jerry West there was a Magic Johnson who paved the way for Michael Jordan than Kobe Bryant, Lebron James and now Zion Willamson. Here in the state of Nevada their are a number of grassroot foundational freshman talents. Here are my predicted torch bearers for the class of 2023.
Sebastian Mack 6’0 Durango G 2023– Mack is the top freshmen in the state in my opinion. He can certainly one day make the claim of being the best player in the state before it’s all said and done. Mack is wise way beyond his years. He has an advanced game. I see some flashes of Kyrie Irving in his game. He is a great knock down shooter, with unlimited range. His YouTube highlights made my jaw drop. Some of the passes he was able to make were pinpoint, flashy but necessary is what I would say. He posses a lighting quick first step. He has the ball on a string. He is an ankle bully. He really puts defenders in a blender and mixes them up. Beyond the flashiness he makes defenders make business decisions if you give him too much space he can knock down a jump shot on you. If you play defense on him too tight he can create separation with his speed and slick handles. Don’t be surprised if Mack has numerous prolific scoring nights in his career.
O’siris Grady 6’6 Silverado F 2023- What makes Grady such a fantastic prospect and why I consider him a “Diaper Dandy” is due to one word. “Versatility” the game of basketball has evolved so much over the years and young men like Grady tend to be stars in this generation. He has a strong frame he can use that frame to set up shop around the rim. He can score from all over. If you need him to knock down a perimeter shot he can. He’s an excellent screen and roll player. Also he sets textbook screens getting teammates open looks. When he gets to the basket he’s very ambidextrous I wouldn’t say he just has one dominant hand. Grady always keeps his head on a swivel. He can find the open man and deliver accurate bounce passes to the cutter. Silverado has a bright future and having a guy like Grady on their team ensures that future.
Angelo Kambala 6’0 Coronado G 2023- Kambala displays a lot of shifty moves. Kambala is a knock down shooter (mid & deep) he has unlimited range. He never met a shot he didn’t like and he couldn’t hit. He can diagnose any play so if your playing with him pay attention because a well telegraphed pass will be at your doorstep. Very tough minded kid. He has a multitude of skills and he is very confident in every skill he has. He recently dropped 14 points 6-6 from the field at the Pangos All-West Fr/So Camp “Next 20” Game. His performance really put a lot of on lookers on notice. Once he grows a little bit more into his body the world better watch out because you will be hearing his name for a long time.
Darnell Marcus Fizer Jr 6’4 Silverado G 2023- If Fizer’s name sounds familiar that is because his dad was former lottery pick Marcus Fizer. The younger Fizer is doing his best to create a name of his own and he has been doing that putting together some strong summer showings. Fizer already is looking like the “next coming” this fall he will take his multi-faceted talents to Silverado. In Fizer Silverado will be getting a great athlete, with an innate ability to get to the bucket and finish. He is well built for his age. Fizer just does what he wants on the court. He can knock down wide open and contested jumps shots. He has a strong dribble drive game. And his tall lanky frame gives him the ability to see over defenders and make easy passes. Colleges will be banging on his door if he continues to develop at the pace he is on currently.
Keenan Bay 6″4 F, Blake Rice 6’1 G Bishop Gorman 2023- It wouldn’t be Bishop Gorman if they didn’t have great young prospects to keep an eye out for. Both Bay and Rice are two talented young men that will lead Gorman’s already historic program into it’s future. Bay is a prototypical SF he can stretch out and hit open jump shots, he can also play great defense. Bay is very long and he does a lot of great things. His development going forward will certainty be a story to watch going forward. Blake Rice can spread out and knock down open shots. Another prospect with great range. He can be potentially be the straw that stirs the drink for this team he has showed he can be an excellent young court general. I would predict Gormon allows these two youngsters to star on their JR varsity team and develop.
