Last weekend’s Ron Massey Fall Hoops Classic featured many of Southern California’s top programs and players. The two-day event also shined a spotlight on some of the more impactful transfers who switched schools over the summer. Below are five players who will don a new uniform this season.

Impact Transfers (Part I)

Jaylen Carter, from Dorsey to Lynwood

The junior wing made the City Section to Southern Section move and brings with him a hard-nosed approach to the game. At 6-feet-4, Carter plays with high energy on both ends of the floor. He’s a versatile defender and good rebounder who crashes the defensive glass and can lead the break if needed.

Jayce Catchings, from Liberty (MO) to Rancho Christian

Catchings averaged 26.8 points per game as a junior last season and comes west adding another strong piece to an already very good Rancho Christian team. The 6-foot-3 wing came off the bench over the weekend and brought a toughness factor to the defensive end and a much-needed 3-point shooting threat to give 7-footer Evan Mobley some more room to operate inside.

Charles Erving, from Segerstrom to Pacifica Christian

Erving might be considered on the smaller scale of transfers coming from Segerstrom in Santa Ana, but as far as CIF Southern Section divisional impact is concerned, the 6-foot-1 guard will be an important piece for the Tritons. Erving averaged 19.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game at Segerstrom last season and will be a reliable offensive threat at Pacifica Christian this year.

Amir “Duke” Gipson, from Dorsey to Taft

Gipson was missing in action over the weekend due to injury per Taft coach Derrick Taylor, but the 6-foot-8 sophomore will be a welcomed addition to a squad that will be in the City Section Open Division conversation. Gipson is a skilled young big man with a soft touch around the basket.

Trent Goldmann, from Redondo Union to Bishop Montgomery

Goldmann won’t make up for the loss of 6-foot-8 center Bradley Ezewiro exiting the South Bay for Oak Hill Academy, but based on the shooting touch he displayed, the 6-foot-3 guard could see some impactful time for the Knights.
