Continue ReadingBloom 2020 small forward Christian Shumate is the best dunker and athlete overall in the state and I don’t really know if it’s close. He has been creating quite a buzz since he made the move over to Bloom for his senior season with his play in open gyms. The top 20 senior had several highlight reel dunks at the recent PrepHoops Top 250 Camp which had everyone on their feet! He will fit in seamlessly as a combo forward this season at Bloom. If he can add some consistency on his jumper he could blow up this season on the recruiting trail!
What is going on with recruiting?
“A lot of the schools that are recruiting Martice (Mitchell) and Keshawn (Williams) are coming up to open gyms and watching me. We have had a lot of big colleges into open gyms. I have talked to Hampton recently. They said they are going to start recruiting me. I am waiting on more offers.”
One school in particular is showing heavy interest.
“Southern Utah is talking to me a lot. My relationship with them is pretty good right now. They are the highest one right now. I am planning on visiting there soon.”
Shumate transferred over to Bloom from Plainfield East for his senior season.
“Those guys have become my brothers. We have been playing together in AAU and are building chemistry. Donovan (Newby) is building a relationship with me as our lead guard. It is always fun playing together. We try to have fun and win games.”
What will he try to show college coaches this season?
“Being able to play out on the wing more. I have been working on my shot every day in the gym twice a day. Putting up a lot of reps. I am going to try to showcase that as much as possible. Show colleges I can shoot from the mid-range and wings.”
Shumate checks in at #20 overall and the #7 small forward in the 2020 PHI Rankings.
