The annual Prep Hoops Illinois Top 250 Showcase in Romeoville brought out a ton of talent. Majority of the prospects were Upperclassmen in the 2020 & 2021 classes but the event was not short on talent in the 2022 class. Here we take a look at some of the standouts for the class at the Guard Position (PG/SG)
Austin Ford 5’10” G – Leo Catholic
Ford was one of the most electric scorers in the event. The 5’10” point guard has a good feel in the open court. He used his slick handle to really work the pick and roll to get to the rim. He was a tough matchup because he keeps defenders off guard with his quickness and ability to get to the rim and finish or create for others. He also shot the ball extremely well from deep. In one game I scouted he hit 5 three pointers in the half. He was hitting shots both off the catch and dribble and will be a player to track at Leo.
Daurise Perryman 5’10” G – Michele Clark
This was my first time watching Perryman and I really like what I saw. He is a strong physical guard built like a running back, he brings a lot of energy on both ends of the court. Has the physical tools to be a defensive stopper. Perryman uses his build and quickness to get to the hole and finish through contact but what really impressed me was his ability to catch and shoot he has a quick release and hit several pull ups in the last game I scouted of his.
Caleb Burton 6’0’’ G – O’Fallon Township
O’Fallon Township Guard Caleb Burton impressed and stood out with his overall skill set, basketball IQ and ability to get others involved. In an open gym setting you can get players who want to prove and show their ability, and often press and try to do too much. Burton played within himself, got other involved, defended well, and scored from all three levels. He is strong going to the rim and showed a smooth midrange game and stretched the floor with some 3’s. He made smart plays getting others easy looks by making the extra pass.
Jayden Dean 6’0’’ SG – Neuqua Valley
The Neuqua Valley Sophomore Jayden Dean started off a little sluggish which can happen when playing with players you never played with before but he quickly heated up. His ability to rebound from the guard spot really stood out, he attacked the glass. Dean was very crafty getting to the lane and making plays at the rim or pulling up for floaters and midrange jumpers, In the last game I scouted of his he went off in the second half, scoring at the rim. He is also strong on defense.
Kevin Vasser G – 6’0’’ Rich Central
Vasser has hot from deep at the PrepHoops Tops 250 the athletic guard showed he can really stretch out and that you have to guard him on the perimeter. In a game I scouted of his he hit 4 three’s in the half alone. He ran some point, and guarded the other team’s primary ball handler making it hard to them with solid on ball defense he has long arms and was getting out in the passing lanes also.
Cameron Cleveland 6’0’’G – Leo Catholic
Leo has some nice young guards with Ford and Cleveland. Cleveland played with a lot of energy and was best when he was a downhill driver getting to the rim with some really nice finishes in traffic. Quick release on his shot. Wired to score similar to Ford. Leo should be exciting to watch the next couple of years.
Titus Ervin – 5’5’’ PG Providence St. Mel
One of the smaller prospects in the event but that did not matter to Titus Ervin he was making plays using his quickness and good feel to get good looks out on the break to hit 3’s where his hit multiple in both games I scouted of his. He is a smooth passer getting it to teammates on the fast break or off the dribble in half court.
Mason Delaney 5’10’’ G – Plainfield North
Delaney showed a smooth shot from deep and ability to find others to stand out on the day. He played under control and was able to put pressure on defenders. I liked his skillset from handles, fundamentals on his shot and defence. Will be a player to keep an eye on.
Ahmad Henderson 5’8’’ PG – Brother Rice
A guard to keep track of will be Ahmad Henderson from Brother Rice. He was active on the day. He showed the ability to make really tough crafty plays at the basket, and also set up others off the pass. Played bigger than 5’8’’ getting in for rebounds, and showed he was athletic on defense with quick hands to get steals.
