Things change and shift opinions pretty often, my predictions made a couple of months ago are most likely different from what they are now as I’ve had more time to be around the players and evaluate them further.
State Championship Favorite: Salpointe Catholic
Salpointe has been so close to reaching their ultimate goal over the last 4 years. This is the year that they will finally achieve that goal. Amongst the community, it seems that a lot of people think of Salpointe as one of the top teams in state regardless of class. While I won’t make that claim, I don’t believe that they are the best 4A team by far and will win the State Championship. Evan Nelson is the best player in 4A and one of the best players in state. Nelson alone would be enough to put them in title contention. Add in other talented pieces such as Gainey and factor in all of their chemistry and you have a sure fire state champion.
State Championship Runner-Up: St. Mary’s
St. Mary’s has a lot of really talented and young players. I think their talent alone between, Phelps, Cherry, and Gonzalez will allow them to go very far this year. However, I think their youth could potentially hurt them going forward, especially matching up against Salpointe Catholic. They’re a very talented team but I think the 2020-2021 season is their season to make a run at state.
