McGrory (Edina), Hedstrom (Hopkins), Davison (Maple Grove), Reuvers (Lakeville), Wahl (Lakeville), Carlson (East Ridge), and Crowl (Eastview). The Twin Cities suburban region sure seems to love the Badgers. The inner city, the private schools, the outstate, nothing. But those suburbans love the four hour drive, and the colors red and white.
“I think Wisconsin is getting a kid that plays within the team concept,” Coach Paul Goetz told Even Flood of Prep Hoops. “He’s a very, very good passer. That might be his best skill. He’s really good on the perimeter, can pick and pop, can stretch the floor. He can really shoot the ball. His footwork inside and defensively in screen and roll type action is just really mature for a senior in high school.
“He knows how to play the game. As soon as he gets a little strength, I think he’s got a lot of potential at the next level.
“He (Crowl) always seemed to be real comfortable with Wisconsin. Steve is very humble and soft-spoken, but I could tell he felt comfortable around them. The coaching staff was a huge part of his decision.”
Carlson felt it was the right fit as well.
“I think the biggest thing is I fit in really well with the program as a whole,” Carlson told Flood. “I felt really comfortable with the team and the coaching staff. I was just really comfortable overall. I feel like Wisconsin gave me the best fit overall.
“It’s been a long process, but this is the place for me, and I know they were really excited for me.
“They see me being able to do a lot of things. Come off ball screens, bring the ball up the floor, shoot 3’s, post up…just kind of use my versatility all over the floor. On the defensive end too, being able to guard multiple positions is big for them.”
Crowl and Carlson played with D1 Minnesota together and will enjoy playing at Wisconsin together.
“He’s excited to play with me again,” Carlson explained. “We play really well together too.”
