With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top duos in Class AAAA for this upcoming season:
Wayzata: Kody Williams and Camden Heide
The Trojans have enjoyed sustainable success in recent years and it looks like that’ll continue despite graduating a really good senior class from a year ago thanks in large part to the young talent in the Wayzata program. Kody Williams heads into his third year at the varsity level and showed throughout the summer that he’s ready to take the reigns of the Trojans’ offense. He’s one of the strongest guards in the state and combines it with smarts and skill. He averaged 10 points per game last year in a complementary role. Expect his point and assist numbers to go up big this year. He’s joined by Camden Heide, who is one of the best sophomores in the state. He’s 6-foot-6 with guard skills and excellent explosiveness. Heide averaged better than 13 points a game a year ago and had an awesome summer. He’s young, but he’s one of the best players in the state.
Spring Lake Park: Gabe Myren and Blake Remme
Spring Lake Park was one of the surprising teams in Class AAAA a year ago and Myren and Remme were the leaders in that effort. Both are back and leading a team that heads into the 2019-20 season with high expectations. Myren had a great summer playing with Matrix, showing he can get into the paint and score against top-notch competition while defending at a high level. Remme averaged 18 points per game a year ago and has the skill, size and athleticism to be a Player-of-the-Year type guy in the Northwest Suburban Conference.
Lakeville South: Reid Patterson and Riley Mahlman
The Cougars could be one of the favorites in Section 1 this winter and they’ve got a lot of young talent to be excited about. Patterson is one of the top players in the 2021 class and averaged 16 points per game as just a sophomore. He played up a year this summer with Select and stood out. His game is really advanced. Mahlman is a star football recruit who doubles as a bruiser on the basketball court. He’s a double-double guy inside for the Cougars and can dominate a game on both ends of the floor.
Robbinsdale Armstrong: Adam Biewen and Jake Breitbach
Robbinsdale Armstrong was another surprise team a year ago, winning 18 games. The Falcons could be even better this year as a big chunk of their core returns. The duo of Adam Biewen and Jake Breitbach could be one of the best in Class AAAA. Biewen is an excellent shooter on the wing and has the size and athleticism to create his own shot effectively. Breitbach averaged 12 points per game as a junior and will take on a bigger role as a primary ball handler and shot-creator for the Falcons this year. He’s a heady player who does a good job balancing looking for his own shot and attacking while also making his teammates better.
Prior Lake: Dawson Garcia and Tyree Ihenacho
Prior Lake will go into the year with high expectations and while the Lakers have a lot to figure out on the perimeter, they’ve got a really good duo to lean on in Dawson Garcia and Tyree Ihenacho. Garcia is the best big man in the state and if he’s healthy, could be a Mr. Basketball candidate. Ihenacho was solid last year in a complementary role, excelling as a defender and off-ball guy. He’ll take one a bigger offensive role now and with how he played over the summer, he looks more than capable of handling a bigger load.
